Mary Washington Sophomore Rachel Summers Repeats as CAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Mary Washington sophomore Rachel Summers earned CAC Player of the Week honors for the fourth time this season after picking up singles and doubles wins in the Eagles' victory over No. 15 Washington & Lee on Saturday. In doubles, she paired with Caroline Mosberg to defeat Valerie Marshall and Lily Horsley at the No. 2 position, 8-7 (4), to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead after doubles. She then scored a pivotal 6-3, 5-0 (ret.) win at No. 2 singles over Marshall as the Eagles gained the one-point victory. She improved to 11-3 on the spring in singles play.

Mary Washington sophomore Rachel Summers was chosen as the CAC Player of the Week for the third time this year after going unbeaten in singles and doubles for the Eagles in a 2-0 week. She went 2-0 at No. 2 singles against Salisbury and TCNJ, and also picked up a No 2 doubles win vs. TCNJ with Caroline Mosberg. In singles, she scored a 7-5, 6-0 win at Salisbury over Julia Kwedi, and tallied a 6-4, 6-2 win over Grace Minassian at TCNJ.

Christopher Newport sophomore Johanna Ranta-aho was honored as the CAC Player of the Week for the second-straight week and third time this spring after winning all four of her matches and helping the Captains secure the No. 2 seed in the CAC Tournament with wins over Salisbury and St. Mary's. Ranta-aho extended her singles winning streak to 12 matches, defeating Salisbury's regionally-ranked Annika Kezman (No. 14 in Atlantic South) at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-4) and then took down St. Mary's Sophie Gary (6-0, 6-0). She also won a pair of doubles matches with two different partners. She played at No. 3 against Salisbury with Lily Schreiber, winning 8-0, before teaming with Alexandra Drye for a No. 1 doubles victory against St. Mary's, 8-3.

Christopher Newport sophomore Johanna Ranta-aho earned CAC Player of the Week honors for the second time this season after winning all four matches she played in conference play last week. Against Penn State Harrisburg, who posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles and teamed with Lily Schreiber for an 8-0 triumph at No. 2 doubles. Against York, she won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and secured another 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles with Isabelle Wessel. Ranta-aho has now won 10-straight singles matches.

Salisbury sophomore Julia Kwedi was tabbed as the CAC Player of the Week after going 3-0 in victories over Washington College and St. Mary's on Friday. Against Washington College, ranked No. 20 in the Atlantic South Region, Kwedi won her No. 1 doubles match with playing partner Annika Kezman 9-8 (9-7) before battling to a three-set victory at No. 2 singles. Kwedi's 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 win was the match-clinching victory in the 5-4 Salisbury win. Against St. Mary's, Kwedi and Kezman earned an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles.

Mary Washington senior Hannah Jabusch was chosen as the CAC Player of the Week after tallying a perfect 4-0 singles record as the 16th-ranked Eagles went 4-0 on the weekend to improve to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in CAC action. Jabusch won matches at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 over the weekend. She topped Caroline Stallings of Centre at No. 3, 6-3, 6-3, and Maisie Supp of York at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0, on Saturday. On Sunday, she topped Sydney Nye of Penn State Harrisburg at No. 1, 6-0, 6-0, and then Isabelle Wessel of 26th-ranked CNU at No. 4, 6-0, 6-1. She also picked up a doubles win against York at the No. 2 spot, winning 8-2 with Sophie Dixon. She is 9-2 on the spring in singles play.​

Southern Virginia sophomore Rachel Christensen was honored as the CAC Player of the Week after leading the Knights to a pair of team wins with 2-0 records at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. In a 9-0 win over Salem, Christensen won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles and outlasted her opponents 4-6, 6-0, 12-10 at No. 1 singles. In a 7-2 triumph over Meredith, Christensen won 8-2 in doubles and 7-5, 3-6, 10-1 in singles.

Mary Washington sophomore Rachel Summers was tabbed as the CAC Player of the Week for the second time in 2017-18 after registering a perfect 3-0 record in singles and doubles last week as the 16th-ranked Eagles won three-straight matches in California. At No. 2 singles, Summers defeated Julia Reisler of Caltech 6-4, 6-0, Elizabeth Johnson of Redlands 6-2, 6-2, and Madison Ross of Chapman 6-2, 7-5. She also teamed with Caroline Mosberg for 8-1, 8-1, and 8-2 wins at No. 2 doubles.

Christopher Newport sophomore Johanna Ranta-aho was honored as the CAC Player of the Week after winning her singles and doubles matches in the Captains' 6-3 win over Caltech. At No. 1 singles, Ranta-aho defeated Kana Moriyama 6-4, 6-1. She also paired with Kate Huck from an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Julia Reisler and Erin Wang.

Salisbury sophomore Annika Kezman was selected as the CAC Player of the Week after beginning the season a perfect 7-0 through four matches. Kezman has won all four of her No. 1 singles matches in straight sets. In doubles play, she has teamed with classmate Julia Kwedi for a 3-0 record at the No. 1 position. The Sea Gulls are off to a 3-1 start this spring with wins over Dickinson, Catholic, and Bridgewater (Va.).

York junior Rachel Wagner received CAC Player of the Week accolades after leading the Spartans to a pair of non-conference wins with a 2-0 mark in both singles and doubles. At No. 2 singles, Wagner recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win over Albright's Sir Yenda on Friday and followed that with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 win over Catholic's Sarah MacLean on Saturday to finish the fall a perfect 6-0 at the second singles position for York. On Friday, Wagner teamed with sophomore Gina Liguori to earn an 8-0 second singles decision over Albright. The duo earned another 8-0 in Saturday's victory over Catholic. Wagner and Liguori finished the falll 6-0.

Mary Washington sophomore Rachel Summers earned CAC Player of the Week accolades after capturing the ITA Southeast Regional singles title on Monday, becoming the first UMW player since 2000 to win the tournament. Summers, the nine seed, defeated Anjali Kashyap of Carnegie Mellon, 7-6 (5), 6-4, in the final. Earlier in the day, she topped Hannah Rosenfield of Carnegie Mellon, 7-5, 6-3. In all, she won six matches over the weekend, including three over seeded players, and won all six matches in straight sets. Summers will advance to the ITA Small College National Championships in October. She becomes the first Eagles to claim the singles flight since Lea Schon in 2000.​
