Salisbury University senior pitcher Dustin Herbert and the rest of the baseball team made it quite clear that they did not want Saturday to mark the final day of the 2011 season.

In an elimination game against Kean University, Herbert worked 8 1/3 innings while the offense pounded out 14 hits in a 10-3 victory to remain alive at the College World Series.

The Sea Gulls (34-13) jumped on Kean starting pitcher Kevin Herget in the early innings, scoring three runs in the first and two in the second. Freshman Bill Root was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the first inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Senior Brian Green drove Root home as Salisbury's first run of the day with a single to right center field. It was the start to a big day for Green, who would later score in the inning on a triple to right field by senior Devon Quaglietta.

Green would finish 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three driven in. Along with Root and freshman Ken O'Neill, Salisbury's top three hitters combined to go 7-for-11 in the game, scoring five of the Sea Gulls' runs on the day.

O'Neill and Green each drove in runs in the second inning to push the Salisbury lead to 5-0, giving Herbert a big cushion.

Herbert retired the first six batters he faced before surrendering a leadoff walk in the third. The Huntingtown, Md., native was on his game from the beginning, allowing just three runs (two earned) on nine hits while striking out six as he improved his record this season to 9-2.

Herbert also got some dynamic plays behind him defensively including a diving catch in right field by junior Nick Walls and a diving stop by freshman John Schiotis at second base in the fourth inning. Schiotis popped up and threw to first to retire the side, stranding the bases loaded for Kean, keeping the score 5-0 in favor of the Gulls.

Senior closer Drew Baldwin came on in the top of the ninth inning, recording the last two outs of the game by strikeout to finish off the win.

With the victory, Salisbury advances to Sunday afternoon, when the Sea Gulls will take on either Buena Vista University or Keystone College at 4:30 p.m.
