INTRODUCING ... Salisbury Senior Baseball Pitcher Dan Fein

INTRODUCING ... Salisbury Senior Baseball Pitcher Dan Fein

Dan Fein has baseball and education in his blood.  The 2013 CAC all-star was mentored early in his Salisbury University career by a teammate, and as a senior, he’s now trying to pass that on to the young players.  He’s also majoring in secondary education, so the future is all about teaching (and possibly coaching?).  INTRODUCING … Sea Gull lefthanded starting pitcher Dan Fein.

Briefly, what is your background in the sport you play?   At a young age, I fell in love with the game watching the New York Yankees on television in the late 1990's. After that my obsession began and everything I did was centered around baseball.

What is your major in college, and what is the most important thing you learned in that discipline?   My college major is Mathematics Secondary Education and the most important thing I have learned is that everyone has their own perspectives and priorities that cannot be easily changed by anyone but the individual themselves.

What is your favorite spot on campus?  My favorite spot on campus is the Athletic Training Room because I am always surrounded by teammates, other athletes, and athletic trainers who are supportive of the Salisbury University athletic community and myself.

Outside of your home and campus, where is your favorite place visit?   My favorite place to visit outside of my home and campus is Baker’s Island, Massachusetts. It is a small island off the coast of Salem, Massachusetts that does not have any cars, electricity or running water. This makes it the most peaceful and relaxing place I have ever been.

Other than your team, what organization (s) do you participate in (on campus or off campus)?   On campus, I am a member of the Student Athlete Mentor Program, The Henson Scholars, and the Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society.

Briefly describe the most memorable experience during your collegiate athletic career.   The most memorable moment in my collegiate athletic career is winning the 2014 NCAA Div. III Mideast Regional Tournament. Nothing beats the feeling of knowing that our hard work and determination finally paid off.

Other than your family members, who was the most influential person in your life?   One of the most recent influential people in my life was a former Salisbury University pitcher Andrew Levy. When I was a lower classmen, he took me under his wing and taught me how to work hard in all areas of life in order to get the most out of myself.  Now he has inspired me to try and push the present underclassmen in the same way, continuing the Salisbury baseball tradition.

What is the most important societal issue facing college students?   I think the most important societal issue facing college students is stress. Stress from school, work, and extracurricular activities can push students to make bad decisions which may be the cause of many other issues college students face. Not enough action is taken to ensure that students stress levels are not dangerous.

If you could change any one item in the world (in your personal life, school, community, amateur or professional sports, national/international issue, etc.), what would it be, why, and how would you do it?   I would change the rules for NCAA athletes so that they are able to make profit off the name they have worked hard to establish. Players do not need a salary, but if they can earn money from the hard work they have put into a large commitment such as a collegiate sport, then they should be permitted to do so. This change would be simple for the NCAA to make and would avoid a majority of conflict that currently exists between the NCAA and their athletes.

What is your favorite form of entertainment?   My favorite form of entertainment is television. I enjoy it because it provides a break from the stresses of the real world, while also providing an opportunity to be exposed to a variety of different types of entertainment at one time.

If you could give one piece of advice to elementary school children, what would that advice be?  My advice would be to listen to your elders. They are giving you advice based upon what they are glad they knew or what they wish they knew at your age. Therefore taking their advice to heart will likely result in success.

Outside of the CAC, who or what is your favorite sports person or team?   Outside of the CAC, my favorite sports person is Urban Meyer because he understands how to win and how to lead student-athletes in order to put them in the best position to succeed.

Name three (3) people, real or fictional, living or dead, that you'd like to have dinner with?  The three people I would like to have dinner with would be Urban Meyer, John Wooden, and Billy Bean because I would like to learn how they were able to make the athletes they coached/signed so successful.
