CNU’s Lubsen, Cassedy Claim C2C Weekly Baseball Awards

CNU’s Lubsen, Cassedy Claim C2C Weekly Baseball Awards

The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) has announced its weekly awards following the third week of the 2024 baseball season. Christopher Newport's Lincoln Lubsen claimed C2C Player of the Week honors, while the Captains Brandon Cassedy was named C2C Pitcher of the Week.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Lincoln Lubsen, Christopher Newport

Lubsen powered the Captains' dominant offensive performance against a formidable pair at the D3 Showcase on Friday, taking on 16th-ranked Denison and 8th-ranked Marietta. He smashed two home runs -- a grand slam and a solo shot -- to lift the Captains to a couple of wins with 9 RBI on the day. His one-out solo homer against Marietta broke a 1-1 tie and proved enough to win for CNU in the nationally-ranked matchup. Against Denison, he had a two-run double and a grand slam to finish with a season-best six RBI. He added a hit against Bridgewater earlier in the week and finished the four-game performance hitting a team-high .556 while slugging 1.333 with an OBP of .688. He walked five times, scored five times, and also was terrific defensively, catching two would-be base stealers.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Brandon Cassedy, Christopher Newport

Brandon took on eighth-ranked Marietta College in his second start of the season and twirled a 7-inning gem against the Etta Express. He held Marietta to just one run on two hits while striking out seven batters. After giving up the only run allowed in the first inning, Cassedy was nearly unhittable for the remainder of the game -- after the first, he retired 14 of the next 15 batters and he faced only two batters over the minimum. Cassedy allowed only one hit after the first and only one Marietta player advanced beyond first base after the fourth batter of the game.

C2C HIGHLIGHTS

Tim Petrucelli racked up three extra-base hits over the three-game D3 Showcase, including a grand slam to help Salisbury beat eighth-ranked Marietta on Sunday afternoon… In three games this weekend, Mary Washington's Bobby Ayscue recorded a pair of multi-hit games and five hits in 10 total at-bats (.500) average. With those five knocks, Ayscue tripled once and singled four times. The senior also drew three walks to drive his weekly OBP up to .643. In the field, Ayscue was flawless, recording 15 outs in all of his 15 chances as he manned center field for the Eagles once again… Salisbury's Shawn Rosemond pitched 3.1 innings of one-run ball on back-to-back days at the D3 Showcase. On Sunday against Marietta, Rosemond tossed 2.2 scoreless frames for a save, stranding the tying and winning runners in scoring position in the ninth… On Sunday, Mary Washington's Gavin Riley's six-inning start propelled the Eagles to their three-game sweep over Westminster. In his season-high six frames, Riley shoved, striking out seven -- good for a 10.50 strikeouts-per-nine rate -- and yielded just a run. The junior left-hander recorded his second win in his start and trimmed his season ERA down to 2.25 in 16 total innings.
