UMW’s Martin, Riley Sweep C2C Weekly Baseball Awards

The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) has announced its weekly awards following the seventh week of the 2024 baseball season. Mary Washington's Oliver Martin claimed C2C Player of the Week honors, while the Eagles Gavin Riley was named C2C Pitcher of the Week.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Oliver Martin, Mary Washington

In three games this week, Mary Washington freshman Oliver Martin put on a laser show all over the field. The Eagles' catcher went 5-for-9 (.556) for the week.  He recorded a walk, single and a home run in Tuesday's blowout win over Eastern Mennonite, 18-6. In the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against Mt. St. Vincent, Martin went a crisp 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while drawing a walk in the second win of the weekend over Mt. St. Vincent. Behind the plate, Martin made it virtually impossible for base runners to swipe bags as he caught four of the seven would be base-stealers (.571%), including the potential go-ahead runs against the Dolphins in Game 2 on Sunday.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Gavin Riley, Mary Washington

In Gavin Riley's start of the week against Mt. St. Vincent, the junior shoved. He yielded just two base hits in his 6.2 shutout innings, striking out three along the way. Riley, too, was effective with his control as he walked just two batters, putting his weekly WHIP rate at 0.600. In the field, Riley was a perfect 3-for-3 in his fielding chance's as he generated a lot of weak contact on the ground and lazy fly balls to the outfield.

HONORABLE MENTION

PLAYER: Dom Frigiola, Salisbury; Zach Dzarnowski, Christopher Newport

PITCHER: Tyler Villa, Salisbury; Dylan Weber, Christopher Newport

C2C HIGHLIGHTS

Salisbury's Dom Frigiola slashed .364/.462/.636 with a grand slam and five RBIs across three games during the four for the week. The grand slam came on Friday at Washington College to help SU win 8-5… Christopher Newport's Zach Dzarnowski ran his hit streak to six games with at least one base hit in all four games this week for the Captains. That included a 4-for-5 showing with 3 RBI and a triple against Marymount earlier in the week before hitting .400 (4-10) with a pair of walk in a three-game series against Piedmont. He reached base at a .588 clip and piled up 11 total bases during the week… Tyler Villa posted a 1.13 ERA in eight innings across two appearances for Salisbury on the week. On Wednesday against McDaniel he pitched a perfect ninth to finish off a 5-1 win. On Sunday against Haverford, Villa tossed seven innings of one-run, six-hit ball and struck out nine batters to pick up his first win of the year… Christopher Newport's Dylan Weber started two games this week against Marymount and Piedmont, striking out 10 in both outings. First, he picked up the win against Marymount in a quality start with 6.0 innings pitched and one run allowed on just three hits. Then, he earned a no decision against Piedmont after tossing 7.0 innings and scattering five hits while again allowing just a single earned run. For the week, he struck out 20 batters and walked just three.
