UMW’s Christenbury and Riley Capture C2C Weekly Baseball Honors

The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) has announced its weekly awards following the eighth week of the 2024 baseball season. Mary Washington's Jacob Christenbury earned C2C Player of the Week honors, while the Eagles Gavin Riley claimed C2C Pitcher of the Week distinction.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jacob Christenbury, Mary Washington

In three games last week, Mary Washington's Jacob Christenbury recorded nine hits in 15 at-bats (.600), which included a pair of 4-for-5 games against Randolph-Macon (RV) and No. 5 Salisbury. The junior also walked twice and scored four runs, while driving in a run of his own in UMW's 11-9 victory over the Sea Gulls on Saturday. As UMW's lead-off hitter, Christenbury made the most of his time on base against Salisbury as he scored three times in the win. In the field against Salisbury, the shortstop held strong, making the most of his three chances with a pair of assists and a putout.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Gavin Riley, Mary Washington

Against No. 5 Salisbury, Mary Washington's Gavin Riley was dominant in his six innings of work in an 11-9 victory over the Sea Gulls. In those six innings, Riley yielded just two earned runs (both coming in the first inning) before settling down to work five innings without allowing an earned run. The junior struck out four, while allowing just five hits en route to the Eagles' first conference victory of the season.

C2C HIGHLIGHTS

Danny Sheeler had a breakout week at the plate, slashing .636/.700/1.182 with three doubles, one homer, seven runs, seven RBIs, and a 1.882 OPS during Salisbury's 3-1 week. Sheeler drove in at least one run in each of SU's four games… In a doubleheader sweep at Penn State Abington, Christopher Newport's Doc Daniels reached base in eight of his 12 plate appearances with four hits and four walks. He slashed .500/.667/1.000 with a home run, a double, and 3 RBI. In game one, Daniels delivered the first run of the game with an RBI single and then added an RBI double in the top of the ninth. In game two, the Captains were trailing by one in the top of the eighth when Daniels delivered a game-tying solo home run to deep center field to help lift CNU to a come-from-behind win… Cole Williams pitched in three games out of the bullpen, allowing just an unearned run over 5.1 innings and earning two wins for Salisbury. On Wednesday against Washington College, Williams tossed 3.1 scoreless frames, striking out four to pick up his sixth W of the season… Christopher Newport's Brandon Cassedy earned his fifth win of the season with a seven-inning outing against Penn State Abington. He struck out 13 Nittany Lions, taking over the Division III lead for total strikeouts this season with 72.
