Christopher Newport Tops Lycoming, Moves on to NCAA Second Round; Salisbury's Comeback Falls Short Against Middlebury

Fourth-ranked Christopher Newport advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a home win over Lycoming on Friday night, while 24th-ranked Salisbury saw its season come to an end with a loss to Middlebury.

In Newport News, Va., Christopher Newport raced to a 19-point lead at halftime and then held off Lycoming at the Freeman Center, 79-71. The first round victory sends the Captains into another home game Saturday night against NYU (21-5). Tipoff time is set for 7:00 p.m. NYU advanced with an 86-67 triumph over Brooklyn College in the first game Friday night at the Freeman Center.

CNU's victory was the 27th of the season, setting a new school single-season record for wins. The Captains never trailed in the game and are now 27-1 and have won 18 straight games.

Sophomore Aaron McFarland led the way for the Captains scoring 21 points and going five-for-five from beyond the three-point arc. McFarland drained three of his triples in the opening half as CNU pulled away to a 43-24 advantage at intermission. Sophomore Marcus Carter, the CAC Player of the Year, posted his sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Tim Daly added 14 points and nine rebounds, while junior Kevin Regimbal added 12.

In Galloway, N.J., 24th-ranked Salisbury nearly mounted a huge comeback but fell just short, 75-73, to Middlebury at Stockton University. The Sea Gulls season comes to an end at 21-7 with the loss.

Trailing by 11 at halftime, Salisbury opened the second half on a 13-6 run to cut the deficit to five points. The Sea Gulls twice cut the deficit to one point, but were unable to take the lead at any point in the contest. Down by three with time winding down, Middlebury sent Adrien Straughn to the free throw line for 1-and-1. Straughn hit the first and intentionally missed the second, looking for the tip in. The ball ricocheted out of bounds, with possession to the Sea Gulls, with 0.2 second remaining.

Straughn sent the inbounds pass to the front of the rim, where Gordon Jeter elevated and sent the ball home for the apparent game-tying shot. But it was ruled that he caught and released the ball, which is not allowed under the rules with less than 0.4 seconds remaining, and the basket was waved off, ending the contest.

Salisbury was led by Justin Witmer and Jeter, who each scored 18 points in the contest. Straughn finished with eight points and five rebounds.
