Barthelme Leads No. 3 Stevenson Past Cabrini in NCAA Men's Lacrosse Second Round, 13-8
Stevenson men's lacrosse senior Neal Barthelme
scored six goals, including three in the third
quarter, to lead the No. 3 Mustangs to a victory over Cabrini in
the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse
Championship for the third-straight year, 13-8 Saturday at Caves
Athletics Complex.
Stevenson (18-2) has now won three-straight in the series against
its former Pennsylvania Athletic Conference rival that dates back
to the Mustangs' inaugural season in 1995. As a result,
seventh-year head coach Paul Cantabene is now just
three wins shy of 100 for his career.
Barthelme's six goals were a Stevenson NCAA tournament record,
passing the mark of five set by seniors Kyle
Moffitt and Richie Ford versus
Cabrini and Roanoke, respectively, in last year's NCAA Division III
Men's Lacrosse Championship.
With six points, Barthelme was one point shy of the school's NCAA
tournament record for points held by current assistant coach Steve
Kazimer who had seven with two goals and five assists in last
year's second round contest versus the Cavaliers on May 15, 2010.
Barthelme
finished with five points on two goals and three assists in that
meeting.
Barthelme scored two first quarter goals as Stevenson held a 4-2
lead following the opening quarter.
After Jeff Crosby scored with 11:57 remaining in the second to pull
Cabrini within one, sophomore Tyler Reid scored
the first of five consecutive goals for the Mustangs just 30
seconds later as they led 6-3 at the half and 9-3 with 10:03 left
in the third quarter.
Led by Brian Hill who scored two of his team-high three goals, the
Cavaliers (13-6) responded by scoring five of the game's next seven
goals over a span of 12:57 to pull within three at 11-8 with 11:34
left in the fourth quarter.
However, that would be as close as Cabrini would get as Barthelme
and Moffitt each scored in the final five minutes to provide the
final margin of victory.
Senior Jimmy Dailey finished the game with three
assists and now has 58 for the season, setting a new single-season
school record and surpassing the mark of 55 set by Eric
Schmith in 1998.
Dailey now owns the school's career and single-season records for
points and assists.
Moffitt, Reid and Ford each had two points with Ford adding a goal
and an assist. In eight career games in the NCAA Division III Men's
Lacrosse Championship, Ford is tied with Kazimer for the most
points scored by a Mustang in the NCAA tournament with 19 on 15
goals and
four assists.
Dailey is third on that list with 18 points on seven goals and 11
assists.
Junior Ian Bolland totaled 11 saves while earning
his first career NCAA tournament victory and improving his record
to 20-2 as a starter.
Senior Kyle Menendez had four caused turnovers while freshman and
CAC Rookie of the Year Ryan Rubenstein had three ground balls
and two caused turnovers.
Paul Skulski led Cabrini with four points on two goals and two
assists while Hill added three goals and Jeff Crosby totaled two
goals and one assist. Erick Zarzecki had 16 saves.
Stevenson will face another familiar opponent in the quarterfinals
on Wednesday as it hosts No. 7 Roanoke at Caves Athletics Complex
beginning at 4:00 p.m. This will mark the fourth meeting between
the two schools in the last two seasons after they met just once in
the
previous 15 years of the Mustangs' program.
Three of those four meetings have come at Caves Athletics Complex
with Stevenson winning both games in 2010, posting an 18-9 decision
on March 27 and a thrilling 15-14 overtime victory in last year's
quarterfinals on May 19, 2010.
