Six CAC Men's Soccer Players Named NSCAA All-Region
Six men's soccer players from three CAC member institutions earned NSCAA All-South Region accolades, announced Wednesday.
Christopher Newport senior Jalon Brown and Salisbury senior Logan Becker landed on the first team, CNU senior Alec Faulkner was the lone CAC player on the second team, and CNU sophomore Harry Nodwell, Frostburg State sophomore Hassan Mostafa and Salisbury senior Kyle Westbrook received third team accolades.
For CNU, Brown and Faulkner earned their third consecutive All-Region honor. Every year since 2008, the Captains have had at least three players selected to the All-Region squad. Brown's selection to his third straight All-Region first team comes after he was also selected as the conference player of the year for a third consecutive season. One of the Captains' most dynamic players of all-time, Brown saved his finest season for last when he scored a career-high 47 points this year. He ranked ninth nationally in goals scored (20) and tenth in points. Brown broke the all-time scoring mark and the all-time goals record at CNU, breaking the latter with a game-winning header in the second half of the NCAA Sweet 16 win over Whitworth. It was his 52nd career scoring strike, and he set the new scoring mark with 134 points. He had a pair of hat tricks this season and scored five game-winning goals.
Faulkner had yet another strong season
defending the goal for the Captains. He helped the Captains post
nine shutouts and hold opponents to just 7.9 shots per game. One of
the best defenders in program history, Faulkner and the rest of the
back line helped post a 1.17 goals against average in front of a
first-year goalkeeper. He broke the season record for minutes
played and ranks second all-time in career minutes. His role in
ushering the Captains back to the Elite Eight could not be
minimized, as the central defender made game-saving plays all year
long.
Nodwell collected third team honors after ranking sixth on
the team in scoring with five goals and two assists out of the
midfield. A dangerous center-midfielder, the Devon, England native
keyed many scoring plays that didn't end up in the book as assists.
He picked up first team All-Conference honors in his first year in
the CAC and registered the deciding goal against ninth-ranked
Salisbury in the CAC Semifinals.
Salisbury's Becker, a center back for the Sea Gulls, made his second appearance on the all-region team, landing first-team honors this season. Last year, the Pocomoke, Md. native earned his way on to the second team. Becker has played in every game since coming to Salisbury his sophomore season, competing in 60 games. His 6-foot-4 prominence in the backfield helped maintain a defensive wall that gave up just 14 goals in 2014 for a 0.66 goals-against average, which ranked 26th in the country and second in the Capital Athletic Conference.
Joining Becker at the center back position and earning his first appearance on the all-region team is Westbrook, who has played in 63 games in his career donning the maroon and gold. The Salisbury, Md. native earned a spot on the third team for the region. The starting captain of the squad for the past two seasons played a key role in the backfield with his physical and vocal presence on the pitch. Westbrook helped the Gulls post a 0.55 shutout percentage, good enough for 25th in the country and second in the CAC, as the Sea Gulls recorded 11 shutouts through their 20 games in 2014.
Frostburg State's Mostafa led CAC goalkeepers in save
percentage (.905) and finished second in goals against average
(.48) and third in saves (86). He also finished second in the
league with nine total shutouts, including five shutouts in the
CAC. He was a first team All-CAC selection.
The Columbia, Md. native allowed more than one goal just
once in 19 games and posted a run of five-consecutive shutouts in
September. A two-time CAC and ECAC Defensive Player of the Week
honoree this season, Mostafa even handed out an assist in FSU's 3-2
win over York (Pa.). Mostafa, who allowed just
nine goals all season, finished the year ranked second in nation in
save percentage, eighth in goals against average and
164th in saves per game (4.53).
