INTRODUCING ... Frostburg State Senior Defender Mitchell Muise
Frostburg State senior Mitchell Muise is an outdoorsman to the fullest. A Wildlife Management major with a Biology minor, Muise is an avid hunter whose favorite spot is his family’s cabin on the river in southern Maryland. One of his other favorite spots is Bobcat Stadium, where Muise stars as a defender for Frostburg State. INTRODUCING … Mitchell Muise.
Briefly, what is your background in the sport you play?
I began playing soccer when I was 4 years old. I have played on many high level club teams. I have traveled all over the USA and to other countries to play the game. I was also part of my Clarksburg High School state championship team in 2009.
What is your major in college, and what is the most important thing you learned in that discipline?
I am a Wildlife Management major and Biology Minor. Studying these two areas has given me another level of respect for the great outdoors and how much we as society need to re-think our actions that are affecting the local and global environment.
What is your favorite spot on campus (and why)?
This one is easy mostly because I am an athlete but it has to be the stadium. It's where everything else is blocked out and I get to focus on just one thing, soccer.
Outside of your home and campus, where is your favorite place visit (and why)?
My family owns a cabin on the Patuxent River in St. Mary's County, MD. Like the stadium at FSU, it’s the one place I can go to and not worry about anything but relaxing either by the fire or on the River.
Other than your team, what organization (s) do you participate in (on campus or off campus)?
I will be joining QDMA, Quality Deer Management Association, and our Wildlife society this fall.
Briefly describe the most memorable experience during your collegiate athletic career.
After my surgery in the December of 2012, I was skeptical about playing soccer again. However, I returned for the 2013 season as a sophomore and played my first minutes against Hood College. To say I was nervous would be an understatement but I will never forget that I laced up my cleats to fight for the Bobcats again.
Other than your family members, who was the most influential person in your life (and why)?
I would have to say my high school coach Jeremy Spoales because I considered him a second father figure during high school. He showed how to be a good leader and what it meant to work for what you want. He was able to coach a team to win states after only 5 years of the school existing.
What is the most important societal issue facing college students (and why)?
Each and every college student struggles with financial stability during and after college. The cost of living is rising and tuition is on the rise as well. Frostburg tuition went up this past year. While students are encouraged to participate in internships during the summer and winter to enhance their resumes, many internships do not include pay. Thus, some students can afford to do that, however others like myself struggle to make enough money during intermission to support ourselves through the school year.
If you could change any one item in the world (in your personal life, school, community, amateur or professional sports, national/international issue, etc.), what would it be, why, and how would you do it?
As an outdoorsman, I would like to change one thing about the hunting laws around the country which would be to allow hunting on Sundays. This would offer hunters the ability to get out and enjoy the great outdoors more. When people work a normal 40 hour week it’s difficult to do much else and limiting them to hunt on Saturday which is roughly 4 times a month if they are lucky.
What is your favorite form of entertainment (and why)?
I like watching TV and listening to music but I really enjoy being outside in nature. I could be in my tree stand while I'm hunting or as simple as viewing the different kinds of wildlife near my house.
If you could give one piece of advice to elementary school children, what would that advice be?
My advice to them would be to not be afraid of being yourself, it’s okay if you don’t fit in right away.
Outside of the CAC, who or what is your favorite sports person or team (and why)?
I like the Washington Capitals, they are a team that’s been decent the past few years and I believe we have a Stanley Cup trophy in our near future.
Name three (3) people, real or fictional, living or dead, that you'd like to have dinner with (and why)?
Ted Nugent: I would like to have dinner with Ted Nugent because he is a major face in the outdoorsman world and he has always stood up for our rights to hunt. He also has an awesome ranch in Texas.
Zinedine Zidane: Everyone knows Zidane as the man who head butted Matterazzi in the 2006 World Cup final. I see him as one of the best who has ever played the game. I also want to know exactly what made him head-butt Materazzi.
Chris Kyle: I have always supported our military and our veterans and being able to have dinner with Mr. Kyle would be a huge honor. Trying to even imagine the sacrifices he made to our country is hard to and maybe by having dinner with him I could try and understand what he and all of the men and women in our military go through.
