Mary Washington Grabs Lead After First Day of CAC Men's Swim Championships

Mary Washington captured top honors in each of Friday's five events to grab the lead at the conclusion of the first session of the 2014 CAC Men's Swimming Championships. The Eagles scored 267 points, while York sits in second at 146.5, followed by host St. Mary's (137), Marymount (115), Salisbury (114.5) and Frostburg State (65).

Junior Alex Anderson led the way for Mary Washington, claiming first place individually in the 50 freestyle, while also contributing to the winning 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay teams.

UMW's 200 freestyle relay turned in the top performance of session one in the first event of the night, setting a new CAC Championship and conference record with a time of 1:23.39. Anderson, sophomores Matthew Garstka and Vance Solseth, and freshman Henry Bassett comprised the relay for the Eagles.

Mary Washington freshman Tyler Gimple followed with a convincing first-place and NCAA "B" cut mark in the 500 freestyle at 4:36.29, before classmate Dallas Tarkenton captured gold in the 200 IM (1:54.88).

Anderson's "B" cut time of 20.57 in the 50 freestyle made it four straight events for the Eagles, before the UMW 400 medley squad of sophomore Sean Mayer, Anderson, Tarkenton and Bassett took first to round out the night.
