St. Mary's Moves into Tie For Second Place In CAC Men's Tennis Standings

St. Mary's clinched a CAC playoff berth and moved into a tie for second place in the conference men's tennis standings with a 9-0 victory over York Tuesday.

York's setback came 24 hours after the Spartans defeated Stevenson by a 6-3 margin, putting YCP (7-6, 2-3 CAC) in a battle with Frostburg State (9-7, 2-3 CAC) for fourth place in the CAC standings.

Also, Hood picked up a key conference win Tuesday at Wesley, 5-4, to put the Blazers (2-9, 1-3 CAC) in a virtual tie for sixth place with Stevenson (4-7, 1-4 CAC) and the final CAC playoff bid. 

Tuesday at SMC, it was another record-setting day for the Seahawks 15-4, 4-1 CAC), who snapped a nine-match slide against the Spartans.  The last time St. Mary's earned a win over York was during the 2000 campaign with a 4-1 decision on the Seahawk home court.

In the win, senior captain Thomas Hoesman became the program's all-time career doubles wins leader with 36, breaking the old mark of 35 set by Jason Whiteman '99Hoesman picked up his 36th career doubles wins at No. 2 doubles with his partner, junior Kyle Feeley, as the duo posted a come-from-behind 9-7 triumph.

Sophomore Andrew Gear equaled his own single-season singles wins record today as Gear notched his 19th victory of the season with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles.  Today's win was also Gear's 38th career victory, matching the career singles record of 38 set by Whiteman.

After sweeping all three doubles matches, junior Arvin Wong recorded a 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 at No. 2 singles for a 4-0 advantage before sophomore J. Guzzone  posted a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 6 singles for the decisive fifth point.  With his 8-1 win at No. 3 singles, Hoesman remained undefeated in conference singles action with a 5-0 record.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Friday, April 13th as St. Mary's welcomes Salisbury, which ranks 13th in the Atlantic South region, to the Somerset Tennis Complex for a conference match at 3:30 pm.  

At Dover, Del., Hood (2-9, 1-3 CAC) ended a six-game skid and earned its first CAC victory of the season by defeating Wesley (3-5, 0-5 CAC), 5-4.  The Blazers earned two points following doubles and won three singles matches to register their fourth straight win over Wesley in the all-time series.

Carter Reitman and Andrew Blowe improved to 3-4 at first doubles by besting Chris Maximo and Cochise Lucas, 8-2. Chris Papinsick and Travis Kline paired up at No. 2 doubles for the second time this season, earning their first win, 8-5, over Nick Barr and Chris Phillips.

Reitman, Blowe and Kline were all winners at singles as well. Reitman dispatched Maximo, 6-2, 6-1, for his seventh win of the season at No. 1. He is now one win away from tying former teammate and current assistant coach Mike Hardman '11 for the most career singles wins in program history.

Blowe knocked off Lucas in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, for his first win at No. 2.

After falling in the first set, Kline rallied to defeat Barr in a third-set tiebreaker, 7-1, to up his record at No. 3 to 4-6.
