Salisbury And York Advance With First Round Victories In 2012 CAC Men's Tennis Tournament

York started the 2012 CAC men's tennis tournament Saturday with a victory over visiting Frostburg State, and Salisbury continued it today with a shutout victory indoors against Stevenson.

The fourth-seeded Spartans edged FSU, 5-4, to earn a trip to play at top-seeded and defending CAC champion Mary Washington in Tuesday's semifinals.

The third-seeded Sea Gulls defeated Stevenson Sunday to advance to Tuesday's other semifinal at second-seeded St. Mary's.  It's the first time SMC has ever hosted a CAC men's tennis semifinal match.

The title contest, which earns the winner an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championship tournament, is scheduled for Friday (4/27).

Sunday at Salisbury, the Sea Gulls opened play in the CAC tournament with a convincing 9-0 win against Stevenson at the SU Indoor Tennis Center.

In what will most likely be their final home match, all four of the Salisbury seniors, Daniel Barnas, Arthur Jackson, Curtis Quandt and Justin Smith, were in the starting lineup, with each of the four earning a pair of victories.  The senior pair of Jackson and Smith opened the match with a quick 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. Barnas and freshman Daniel Albers made it 2-0 with an 8-4 win at No. 1 followed shortly by Quandt and freshman Nick Mancuso coming up with an 8-1 win at No. 3 to round out the Salisbury doubles sweep.

Barnas closed out a 6-1, 6-0 singles victory at No. 1, just moments before Quandt earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2, sealing the Salisbury win and a trip to the CAC semifinals. Jackson was good for a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 win at No. 4 while Smith prevailed 6-3, 4-6, 10-1 at No. 3.  Salisbury's two remaining points came from sophomore Shane Gunther, with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5, and classmate Paul Berryman, with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6.

Saturday at York, the Spartans advanced to the semifinal round of the 2012 CAC Tournament courtesy of a 5-4 victory over visiting Frostburg St. The triumph pushes the Spartans' 2011-2012 record to 11-7 while the Bobcats bow out at 11-9.

York snagged two points in doubles play, taking the second and third spots. Tyler Cheatham and Nathaniel Hoskins rolled on as they collected an 8-1 victory at second doubles. The pair has now won four straight and are 14-4 overall this season.  Rookies Matthew Rosenkrantz and Jake Greenstein nabbed an important close triumph at third doubles. Rosenkrantz and Greenstein combined to capture an 8-6 victory that would ultimately prove vital to the Spartans continuing their season. As a pair this season, the rookie duo sports a 3-1 mark.

In singles, three Spartans added the necessary points to the Green and White ledger. Senior Philip Myers won the second singles match with a straight set 6-1, 6-0 result to improve his season singles mark to 13-7.  Hoskins and Rosenkrantz captured the third and fifth slots, respectively. Hoskins, breaking into the double-digit plateau with his tenth victory of the season, nabbed another important tight triumph with a three-set 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 win. Rosenkrantz's team-leading 14th win of his freshman season came via a two-set 6-0, 6-2 result. He now sports a 14-5 record in just his first collegiate campaign.
