Salisbury Tops St. Mary's To Earn A Berth In CAC Men's Tennis Championship Opposite Defending Champ Mary Washington

The St. Mary's men's tennis won the regular-season showdown against Salisbury, but the Sea Gulls responded in the CAC playoffs Tuesday with an 8-1 semifinal round victory over the host Seahawks.

Salisbury earns a berth in Friday's CAC title match at 12-time defending champion Mary Washington, which shutout York in Tuesday's other semifinal.

At St. Mary's, Salisbury advanced to the CAC championship match following an 8-1 win against St. Mary's.  The second-seeded Seahawks had beaten Salisbury in the teams' two most-recent meetings, both regular-season meetings, both by 5-4 scores. On Tuesday, a St. Mary's win was unlikely after the Gulls swept the three doubles matches.

The top Salisbury (11-11) doubles pair of senior Daniel Barnas and freshman Daniel Albers came up with an 8-4 win just before the No. 2 pair of senior Justin Smith and junior Adam Goldberger prevailed by the same score. Senior Curtis Quandt and freshman Nick Mancuso finished the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 3.

Albers earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles and Goldberger sealed Salisbury's trip to the championship with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4. Thomas Hoesman earned the Seahawks' (17-4) win at No. 3 singles, topping Quandt, 6-3, 6-3.  Smith collected a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 6, Barnas prevailed 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 before Mancuso finished off his No. 5 match in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 to close out the victory for the third-seeded Sea Gulls.

At Fredericksburg, 24th-ranked Mary Washington swept a 9-0 decision from York College on Tuesday in the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 14-12 on the season.

UMW will host the CAC Championship on Friday against either Salisbury University or St. Mary's College. Match time is tenatively set for 4:00 p.m.
