University of Mary Washington freshmen Evan
Charles and Donato Rizzolo fell in the
semifinals of the NCAA Division III men's tennis doubles tournament
on Saturday in Cary, N.C. The duo fell to Amrik Donkena and Mya
Smith-Dennis of Gustavus Adolphus College, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
In the first set, the Eagles were broken to open the match, and
both teams held serve to move the score to 2-1, Gustavus. A break
by the Eagles and hold gave UMW a 3-2 lead, but the Gusties took a
break and held for a 4-3 lead. After both teams held serve,
Gustavus held off three break points to take the first set,
6-4.
In the second, the Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead, and led, 5-2,
before Gustavus held and broke serve to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Both teams held serve to force the score to 6-6 and a tiebreak. UMW
sprinted out to a 5-3 lead, but Gustavus stormed back with four
straight points to take the match.
