SU’s Brightman, CNU’s Trate Capture C2C Tennis Player of the Week Laurels

The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) has announced its weekly awards following the 10th week of the 2024 spring tennis season.  Salisbury's Caleb Brightman collected C2C Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors, while Christopher Newport's Tessa Trate picked up C2C Women's Tennis Player of the Week distinction.


MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Caleb Brightman, Salisbury

Brightman won both of his matches in the Sea Gulls' upset win at No. 22 TCNJ on Saturday. In second doubles, he and Gurv Suri rolled to an 8-3 dub. In third singles, Brightman outlasted Aayush Kishore (6-1, 1-6, 6-3) for one of four SU three-set triumphs in singles play.


WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Tessa Trate, Christopher Newport

Trate helped Christopher Newport capture the first win in program history over national power Mary Washington by winning in both singles and doubles on Saturday. She paired with Raine Weis for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles and then earned a 6-1, 7-6 (5) win at No. 2 against Hana Kimmey, ranking No. 15 in the region. In an exhibition against Division I Longwood, Trate also earned wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles, clinching the lone team point for the Captains. She won 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 against the Lancers sophomore Oriana Izarra.

C2C HIGHLIGHTS

UC Santa Cruz's Benjamin Wang went 2-1 in doubles this week with partner Ryan Lam. Had his debut at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-0 win in roadtrip finale at Schreiner, helping Banana Slugs to a 7-2 dual win… Senior Peter Leese led #18 Mary Washington this weekend in the northeast as the Eagles split a pair of matches. He and Rishi Charan Shankar swept a pair of matches at one doubles, topping Brandeis, 8-5, and Babson, 8-5. In singles, Leese split a pair of matches, defeating Harrison Huai of Brandeis at five in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1… Christopher Newport's Ashton Legum won all three singles matches this week at No. 4 and 5 ... Also went 1-2 at No. 1 doubles with playing partner Edvard Porsmyr Hansen ... In singles, won against Aaradith Ravichandran (6-1, 6-2) at No. 4, Rushil Patel (6-4, 6-3) at No. 5, and Marco Azar (7-5, 6-3) at No. 5… Salisbury's Gibelle Beaujon won two top-flight matches at No. 41 TCNJ on Saturday. Beaujon earned a straight-sets first-singles win over Aria Abalos, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. In first doubles, Beaujon and Olivia Hall won by an 8-5 margin… UC Santa Cruz's Tanner Rowland went undefeated in both singles and doubles during Texas trip, helping the Banana Slugs defeat Southwestern and Schreiner. Had match-clinching 6-1, 6-0 win Sunday at No. 3 at Schreiner for first back-to-back wins after returning from illness… First-year Pallavi Verghese went undefeated atop the lineup in singles and doubles in a 5-4 win over Stockton to lift Pratt to a 10-0 mark, the time in program history opening with 10 straight victories. She teamed up with fellow rookie Beatrice Crespo for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles and bypassed her opponent in the lead singles match, 6-2, 6-2, to improve to remain undefeated in No. 1 singles dual matches.
