York Senior Tim Hartung Repeats As Capital One Academic All-American

York Senior Tim Hartung Repeats As Capital One Academic All-American

York College senior Tim Hartung (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) closed out his outstanding collegiate career in late May. On Tuesday, Hartung collected another accolade as he was named to the first team Capital One Academic All-America as announced by CoSIDA.

Hartung became just the second York College Spartan, and the 20th student-athlete in Capital Athletic Conference history, to earn first team Capital One Academic All-America honors.

Hartung is also the 11th CAC student-athlete to earn Capital One Academic All-America honors during the 2013-14 academic year - breaking the previous record of eight set last year.

Hartung's list of accomplishments is unsurpassed in the history for York College and the Capital Athletic Conference. He was a seven-time NCAA Division III All-American (twice in cross country, twice in indoor track and field, and three times in outdoor track and field), a five-time All-Capital Athletic Conference Athlete of the Year, a four-time Capital Athletic Conference men's cross country champion (undefeated in his CAC career), a 16-time Capital Athletic Conference track and field (indoor and outdoor) champion, and a two-time national Capital One Academic All-America.

Hartung boasts a 3.60 GPA in the rigorous York College nursing program.

Hartung joins former Spartan softball standout Harper Cornell as a first-team Academic All-America. He is also just the third Spartan to earn national honors twice in his career. All-American women's soccer goalie Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) (2012 and 2013) and basketball standout Brandon Bushey (2005 & 2006) are the other two Spartans to earn the prestigious academic honor twice in their careers.

Hartung's award caps an amazing academic All-America year for the Green and White as a school-record five Spartans earned national recognition. In addition to Hartung and Glessner, senior baseball shortstop Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa./South Western) earned second team honors while men's lacrosse All-American Tyler Hutson (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and baseball All-CAC centerfielder Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) each earned third team honors.

York College now has 14 national Academic All-America student-athletes in school history.

Spartan head coach Stephen LoBianco was pleased to see Hartung earn more post-season hardware.

"Tim is very deserving of this accolade being a five-time All-American as a senior, as well as carrying a 3.6 GPA. Tim has always been dedicated in his athletics and academics. Him being named first team Academic All-America is a great honor not only for Tim, but the York College Cross Country and Track & Field teams."

Each year, the Capital One Academic All-America® program selects 816 distinguished student-athletes to become part of an honorary team in their respective sports -- men's football, basketball, baseball, soccer, track & field/cross-country; women's basketball, softball, soccer, volleyball, track & field/cross-country; and men's and women's at-large teams that include all other NCAA championship sports.

Since 1952, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) has honored more than 20,000 outstanding student-athletes with this prestigious award, which became known as the Capital One Academic All-America® in 2011. The program used to select teams from just two divisions -- the University Division, comprised of Division I schools; and the College Division, which included Division II, Division III, NAIA schools, and 2-year colleges. To better honor the diversity of collegiate talent, however, the program was expanded in 2011 to include four divisions: Division I, Division II, Division III, and the College division that includes NAIA, two-year colleges, and Canadian schools.
