Christopher Newport Head Coach Tyler Wingard Named South/Southeast Region Men's Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year
Christopher Newport head coach Tyler
Wingard was named the South/Southeast Men's
Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year by the USTFCCCA after
leading the Captains to the No. 1 ranking in the region this
season.
In his eighth year at the helm of the program, Wingard has
helped CNU secure the top spot in the South/Southeast while leading
a pair of men to the NCAA Championships. The Captains also placed
second at the Capital Athletic Conference title meet earlier this
month during their first season competing in the league.
At the national level, Wingard's squad will be represented
by Dominique Torres and Richard
Roethel at the upcoming NCAA
Championships. Roethel enters the meet seeded fourth in the
decathlon, while Torres is eighth in the triple jump. Overall, five
men rank among the top-50 nationally in their respective individual
events, while CNU also boasts two of the country's top-50
4x100-relay units.
During the CAC Championships on May 3-4, Wingard's team won
six individual men's titles and set three new records.
Robert Mayes broke the
championship meet mark in the 400,
while Samuel Martin established
a new meet and league record in the 1500.
For his efforts during the winter, Wingard was named the
South/Southeast Men's Indoor Coach of the Year as well. In addition
to the men's successes, the women captured this year's indoor and
outdoor CAC titles and saw five Captains qualify for this week's
national meet.
The regional honor is the fifth for Wingard since he arrived
at CNU prior to the 2006-07 season. He was also named the Men's
Outdoor Coach of the Year in 2008 and earned the Men's Indoor
accolade in 2008, 2013, and 2014.
