Marymount Names Zane Castro Cross Country and Triathlon Head Coach
Marymount University has named Marco Zane Castro as the new head
coach of the men’s and women’s cross country and
triathlon teams, as announced by Director of Athletics Debbie
Warren on Wednesday. Castro becomes the inaugural head coach
of the newly announced varsity triathlon teams and the third cross
country coach in program history.
“We are excited to bring in a coach of Zane’s caliber
to start our triathlon program and take cross country to the next
level,” Warren said. “His experience and connections
within both sports will help us bring in a unique type of
student-athlete to Marymount and promote one
of the fastest growing sports in the country.”
Castro brings over 15 years of triathlon coaching experience to
Marymount and is currently the owner and head coach at Unmatched
Performance in Austin, Texas. He holds both a Level I and Level II
USA Triathlon coaching certification.
“I'm honored to take over the head coaching position for both
the triathlon and cross country programs,” Castro said.
“There is a great deal of potential at Marymount and
I'm looking forward to get settled and started."
Castro has been mentored by Darren Smith for the past two years, a
preeminent coach in the International Triathlon Union World Cup.
While training under Smith, he served as an assistant coach to the
2011 Pan Am Cup prep camp and an assistant coach for the
inaugural
USAT National Recruit Camp in Chula Vista, Calif.
Not without NCAA Division III coaching experience, Castro served as
the assistant distance coach at Trinity University in San Antonio,
Texas, from 2004-05.
Active on the international stage, Castro served as a coach and
consultant with the Ecuadorian Sports Federation and helped
establish and develop its national triathlon program. During
his time in Guayaquil, Ecuador won two national titles in the South
American
National Games.
Castro earned his Bachelor of Science in Health & Fitness from
Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
