Burke, Salisbury Capture CAC Men's Cross Country Championship

Salisbury's Thomas Burke raced to the individual title to lead the Salisbury men's cross country team to the team crown at the 2014 CAC Cross Country Championship on Saturday in Rappahannock Academy, Va. This marks the 10th CAC title for the Salisbury and first since 2010. 

Salisbury totaled 42 points to edge second-place Christopher Newport (50) by eight. York was close behind in third with 55 points, followed by Mary Washington (99) and St. Mary's (168) in the top five.

Marymount (176), Southern Virginia (178), Frostburg State (219), Penn State Harrisburg (266) and Wesley (303) rounded out the team scoring. 

Burke led a contingent of four Sea Gulls in the top 15, crossing in 25:02.2, 10 seconds in front of Christopher Newport's JJ LaPointe (25:12), who claimed second. Salisbury's George Martinez nabbed third at 25:16.3, while Mary Washington's Ben Sorensen (25:16.8) and York's Michael Stetson (25:19.0) completed the top five. 

In addition to Burke and Martinez, Eric Wood (7th) and Brandon Horning (13th) also secured top-15 placings for the Sea Gulls on their way to the team title. Jeremy Skarda rounded out the Salisbury team scoring in 18th place. 

Paced by LaPointe's second-place mark, Christopher Newport finished as the runner-up for the second straight year. Grayson Reid claimed sixth place at 25:19.1, while Jeffrey Dover (9th/25:25.7) and William Rabil (10th/25:27.2) also grabbed top-10 placings for the Captains. 

York saw its three-year reign at the top of the standings come to an end, but did place five runners in the top 16. Stetson led the way in the fifth, while Grant Dell (8th/25:19.6), Matthew Hayes (12th/25:29.6), Ryan Aug (14th/25:32.5) and Andy MacGibbon (16th/25:39.6) also registered top-16 spots. 

Tony Morales led Marymount with an 11th-place finish at 25:27.6, while Southern Virginia's Michael Myers took 15th at 25:35.8. 

Members of the CAC 25th Anniversary Men's Cross Country Team were also honored during the awards ceremony.
