Christopher Newport's Grayson Reid, Matthew Barreau Earn Top Regional Cross Country Honors

Complete List of USTFCCCA Regional Athletes/Coaches of the Year

After claiming the Regional Championship on Saturday, Christopher Newport junior Grayson Reid has been named the South / Southeast Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, while Christopher Newport head coach Matthew Barreau was honored as the region's top coach after leading the men's squad to the team title over the weekend.

Headlining an outstanding effort by the Captains at the regional meet, Reid won the individual title after clocking in at 25:02.87 during the 8k at Berry College's Clara Bowl on Saturday. His time was over 13 seconds faster than the next closest competitor and marked his second-best performance of the year. Reid is just the second CAC runner to win a regional title, joining Mary Washington's Jon Gates, who completed the feat in 1996.

Saturday's performance continued an outstanding junior campaign for the Glen Allen native. Previously this season, Reid was named the CAC Athlete of the Year after claiming the league crown on Oct. 29. He also established a new program record in the 8k during the Paul Short Run after completing the course in 24:43, which shaved five seconds off the previous standard set by Des Proctor in 1989.

Entering the National Championships on Saturday, Reid has won his last four races after taking the individual title during the conference and regional championships as well as the CNU Invitational and Hill Assault.

Along with Reid, Barreau also brought home hardware for his work over the weekend. He was named the South / Southeast Region Coach of the Year after guiding the Captains to the team championship and their second straight appearance at the national meet. Overall, CNU won the regional with 52 points, topping a talented field which included three other teams that earned a spot at the NCAA meet.

In addition to his regional honor, Barreau was also named the CAC Coach of the Year earlier this season after guiding the Captains to their second consecutive Capital crown.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday with the NCAA National Championships, which will be held at the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky. The men's 8k is slated to begin at noon.
