Stevenson Seeded 4th, Hosts Wilson Wednesday In First Round Of ECAC Softball Championship

After posting its second-straight 20-win season, the Stevenson softball team earned its first postseason berth in the team's 12-year history on Monday as the team was one of eight selected to the 2011 ECAC Division III South Championship.

The Mustangs (22-17-1) are the fourth-seed in this year's championship and will host fifth-seeded Wilson (22-11) at Weinberg-Fine Stadium on Wednesday, May 11 at 3:00 p.m. Admission to the game is free and the game will be broadcast live at GoMustangSports.com. The other first round contests include No. 1 Neumann hosting No. 8 Misericordia at 3:00 p.m., No. 2 Alvernia hosting No. 7 Marywood at 4:00 p.m., and No. 3 DeSales welcoming Penn State Altoona at 4:00 p.m.

The tournament is an eight-team field with a quarterfinal round followed by a double-elimination format for the remaining four teams. The first-round winners will advance to play on Saturday, May 14 at the highest remaining seed.

Stevenson finished the regular season on a four-game winning streak and has won eight of its last 10. The team is also unbeaten in its last five at home where it is 10-7-1 this season.

The Mustangs are 4-0 against the other seven teams in this year's tournament having swept a doubleheader at Wilson on March 25 and a home doubleheader against Penn State Altoona on March 19.

Senior Julianne Roper (Baltimore/Western Tech) picked up a 6-3 victory against the Phoenix in game one while freshman Meagan Sumwalt (Linthicum Heights/Catholic) earned a 3-2 decision in game two.

Roper allowed just two earned runs while scattering eight hits and striking out five while senior Desirae Sullivan (Severna Park/Severna Park) and junior Kristin Urban (Timonium/Mercy) each drove in two runs.

Sumwalt allowed just six hits and two earned runs and held Wilson scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when it scored both of its runs on a two-out single before Sumwalt retired the final batter with the tying run on second. Junior Lisa Bilski (Forest Hill/Fallston)
finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs while freshman Lindsay Kuczak (Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) had an RBI triple.
