Lovend, Sullivan And Roper Selected For CAC Softball Weekly Honors

Frostburg State freshman first basman/catcher CAITLIN LOVEND, Stevenson senior third baseman DESIRAE SULLIVAN and Mustang senior teammate JULIANNE ROPER were selected as the CAC Softball Athletes of the Week. Lovend is the CAC Softball Co-Player of the Week after she went 6-for-13 in four games last week, raising her season batting average to .402. She drove in eight runs, scored three times and hit two homers, including a walk-off grand slam against Catholic to give the Bobcats their first of three wins last week. Sullivan is the CAC Softball Co-Player of the Week after pounding out nine hits in 14 at bats (.643), including at least two hits in each of Stevenson’s four contests, all victories. She had three doubles, four runs scored and five RBI during the week. Roper was named the CAC Softball Pitcher of the Week for the second-straight week after compiling a 4-0 record in three starts and one relief appearance. In 23.1 innings, Roper recorded 12 strikeouts to improve to 18-11 for the season.

Stevenson junior outfielder BRITTANY RYNKOWSKI and senior teammate JULIANNE ROPER were selected as the CAC Softball Athletes of the Week. Rynkowski is the CAC Softball Player of the Week after hitting .615 in four games last week, leading the Mustangs to a 3-1 record. She was 8-for-13 with two hits in each game and scored a run for the Mustangs. Roper was named the CAC Softball Pitcher of the Week after winning three games last week for the Mustangs, who are now within one game of reaching the 20-win plateau for the second-straight season. In four appearances, Roper allowed just one earned run on nine hits while fanning 16 in 24 innings. She threw a pair of complete-game 1-0 victories at Randolph-Macon. She also picked up a shutout victory at McDaniel to set a team record for pitching wins in a season.

York senior centerfielder KAREN CARR and Frostburg State junior pitcher MEGAN MAGEE were selected as the CAC Softball Athletes of the Week. Carr is the CAC Softball Player of the Week after batting .500 in six games last week (9-for-18) and had at least one hit in each game for the Spartans. She went 5-for-7 with two runs scored in a DH vs. Frostburg State, followed by a 2-for-6 with two walks performance in a twinbill against Mary Washington. Magee captures the CAC Softball Pitcher of the Week award after recording four conference victories last week, including both decisions in the DH at York that helped the Bobcats clinch the No. 3 seed in the upcoming CAC Tournament. Magee improved to 10-5 overall this year and sparked FSU’s current six-game win streak.

Salisbury junior pitcher ERIKA BRITTINGHAM and Salisbury junior third baseman CASEY ZAINO were selected as the CAC Softball Athletes of the Week. Brittingham wins the CAC Softball Pitcher of the Week award for the third time this season after securing three wins and a save in four appearances last week, including a win and a save in the showdown at York. Brittingham allowed just three hits and no walks in 14.1 innings of work (.065 opponents batting average) while fanning 30. Zaino is the CAC Softball Player of the Week after hitting 4-for-6 in three-straight doubleheaders last week (12-for-18 total, .667 batting avg.) with two walks, three doubles, six runs scored and eight RBI as the Sea Gulls extended their winning streak to 16 games and clinched the top seed in the 2011 CAC playoffs.

Salisbury senior pitcher KELLY LEARY and Salisbury sophomore second baseman CARLY READ were selected as the CAC Softball Athletes of the Week for March 21, 2011. Leary wins the CAC Softball Pitcher of the Week award for the second time this season after striking out a career-best 14 batters and throwing seven ground ball outs to help the Sea Gulls sweep Mary Washington. Read is the CAC Softball Player of the Week after hitting 4-for-5 with two home runs, two sacrifice bunts and scoring five runs in a doubleheader sweep against conference rival Mary Washington. She was also perfect defensively with seven put outs and three assists in 10 opportunities.

Salisbury junior pitcher ERIKA BRITTINGHAM and Salisbury sophomore infielder LINDSAY McCABE were selected as the CAC Softball Athletes of the Week for March 21, 2011. Brittingham pitched in five games last week, posting a 4-0 record with one save for the Sea Gulls. She tossed her third no-hitter of the season in a 2-0 victory over CAC rival Stevenson, and had double-digit strikeout totals in three contests. In five games, McCabe batted .533 (8-for-15) with two walks, a double, three home runs, seven runs scored and seven RBI as the Sea Gulls extended their win streak to eight games. Her two-run dinger in the fifth inning proved to be the game-winning hit in a 6-3 CAC win over Stevenson. She also scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth of a 2-1 win over Capital University.

Salisbury senior pitcher KELLY LEARY (Severn, Md./Glen Burnie) and Salisbury sophomore catcher MICHELLE GRAVDAHL (Ellicott City, Md./Long Reach) were selected as the CAC Softball Athletes of the Week for March 14, 2011. Leary threw 16 innings in three games, picking up two shutout victories. Leary’s was strong in Sunday’s second game against CAC rival Frostburg State, scattering four hits and two walks while fanning 10 in a shutout victory. Gravdahl went 9-for-14 last week, with hits in five of Salisbury’s six games and three perfect games at the plate. She added three extra-base hits, seven walks for a .762 on-base percentage with seven runs scored and eight RBI as the team went 5-1. In Sunday’s DH vs. Frostburg State, she had two singles, a double, triple, walk, two runs scored and an RBI.

York junior pitcher BRITTANY THERRES and senior Spartan first baseman MICHELLE BARWICK were selected as the CAC Softball Athletes of the Week for March 7, 2011. Therres won four of her five decisions in the first week of the season, posting a 1.33 ERA and two shutouts on the team’s season-opening Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. Therres held opponents to a .216 batting average and struck out 18 in 27 innings. She also contributed two hits, five RBI and three runs scored in a victory over Maine-Presque Island. Barwick led the Spartans to a 7-1 Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., by hitting .435 for the week (10-for-23) with three doubles, a triple, five runs scored and 12 RBI. Her .480 on-base percentage and .652 slugging percentage included a career-best four hit peroremance with four RBI in a victory over CAC rival Mary Washington.

Salisbury’s junior pitcher ERIKA BRITTINGHAM and Fr. 1B HARLEY HILL were selected as the CAC Softball Athletes of the Week for Feb. 28, 2011. Brittingham went the distance in two of Salisbury’s three wins in the opening week of the season, including a no-hitter vs. Roanoke. In limiting opponents to a .070 batting average, she surrendered just three hits while striking out 29 in 14 innings. She also chipped in with four hits and two RBI in seven at bats (.571). Hill banged out seven hits in her first four collegiate games at Methodist’s Early Bird Invitational, including two doubles and a homer. In addition to a .438 batting average, she had three runs scored and four RBI for the Sea Gulls.
