Salisbury's Michelle Gravdahl Named 2013 NFCA Catcher of the Year

When Salisbury University softball catcher Michelle Gravdahl finished her career she was certainly considered one of the best at her position in the nation, having batted .430 for her career and helping the Sea Gulls' pitching staff to a 1.28 ERA in the past four years. The moniker of best catcher was confirmed when the National Fastpitch Coaching Association recently named Gravdahl the Diamond Sports Catcher of the Year for Division III. She becomes the first Sea Gull in program history to earn the prestigious award.

Senior Hannah Mills provided a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the first inning to punch the No. 1 Salisbury University softball team's ticket to Eau Claire, Wisc., on Monday morning in the Salem, Va., NCAA Regional. The two runs would prove all the Sea Gulls would need to advance, but a four-run sixth inning and two-run seventh gave SU the 8-0 win over Piedmont College to advance to the program's seventh World Series.

Senior Michelle Gravdahl faced a 2-and-2 count on Friday afternoon at the Salem Regional of the NCAA softball tournament as top-seeded Salisbury was tied, 3-3, against Christopher Newport University. The game was suspended due to rain and strong winds, and it was nearly 15 hours before Gravdahl saw her next pitch; she made the most of the wait, blasting a grand slam on the first pitch she saw Saturday morning. The shot gave the Sea Gulls a 7-3 lead in the top of the eighth inning, and they would maintain that edge for the extra-inning win against the Captains, keeping the maroon and gold undefeated in the double-elimination tournament.
