SU’s Challender, Purdy Selected C2C Softball Players of the Week

The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) has announced its weekly awards following the fifth week of the 2024 softball season.  Salisbury's Emily Challender claimed C2C Player of the Week honors, while the Sea Gulls Isabella Purdy was named C2C Pitcher of the Week.


PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Emily Challender, Salisbury

Challender batted .714 across six games played (five starts) at third base. Had multi-hit games in four of five games started. Knocked a double against Lynchburg (3/14) and TCNJ (3/16). Had three hits against SUNY New Paltz (3/17). Was successful on three-of-three stolen base attempts.


PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Isabella Purdy, Salisbury

Purdy picked up three wins in three appearances in the inaugural Margie Knight Classic with a win against Lynchburg in relief (3.2 IP, 0 R, 5 K), followed by starts against TCNJ (5 IP, 2 ER, 5 K) and SUNY New Paltz (CG, 3 H, 0 ER, 3 K, 83 pitches). For the week, Purdy pitched 15.2 innings with 12 hits against, five runs (two earned), with 13 strikeouts to six walks - posting an ERA of .89 and a WHIP of 1.15.

PITCHER: Caitlyn Burch, Mary Washington


C2C HIGHLIGHTS

In eight games this week, Mary Washington's Bridget Laychak recorded 10 hits in 28 at-bats (.357 average), while drawing a walk that upped her on-base-percentage to a .379. The senior roped a walk-off double to left field in a 5-4 extra-inning victory over Bridgewater, then hit a home run in the second game against Bridgewater on March 13. In the final six games of the week, Laychak was a hit machine, going 10-for-23 (.435 average). She also drove in four runs, while striking out just three times… In five appearances this week, Mary Washington's Caitlyn Burch recorded a 2.66 ERA in 23.3 innings, while striking out 22 hitters. In the lone game she recorded the victory in, Burch went eight innings in an extra-inning win over Bridgewater, as she struck out nine hitters.
