CNU’s Slaw, Alger Capture C2C Softball Players of the Week

The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) has announced its weekly awards following the sixth week of the 2024 softball season.  Christopher Newport's Candace Slaw earned C2C Player of the Week honors, while the Captains Kate Alger received C2C Pitcher of the Week distinction.


PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Candace Slaw, Christopher Newport

Slaw continued her torrid freshman season by posting eight hits in 13 at bats this week for a .615 average.  In the first game versus Bridgewater, hit 1.000 with four hits.  She also stole six bases in four games and scored five runs and drove in two as the fifth-ranked Captains swept Bridgewater and NYU.


PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Kate Alger, Christopher Newport

Alger gave up just one run in 15 innings of work this week for Christopher Newport as the Captains won all four games they played. Alger is now 7-2 after earning wins at Bridgewater with 10 strikeouts and at home over NYU with 6 K's.  She struck out 18 batters and now has 66 strikeouts this season in 57 innings, 14th in the country. She also earned her first save of the season in the second game at Bridgewater, throwing a scoreless seventh inning to preserve a 4-1 victory. She yielded just five hits and three walks in her 15 innings of work.

C2C HIGHLIGHTS

Salisbury's Meghan Reed hit .556/.643/.667 in four games against NYU and Manhattanville. Had at least one RBI in each game this week. Had two runs in games against NYU (3/18) and Manhattanville (3/22). Walked four times while also driving in five runners. Was perfect in the field at second base in ten chances… In six games this week, Mary Washington's Bridget Laychak went 6-for-17 (.353) with a homer and two walks. In a 9-6 win over Randolph, Laychak hit a home run and singled, while driving in a pair of runners. After an 0-for-3 appearance to start out the week, Laychak recorded at least a hit in every game, going 6-for-14 (.429)… Salisbury's Nicole Ortega pitched seven innings over two games with no runs allowed. Struck out five while holding opposing batters to a .087 batting average against. Chipped in on offense with a run and RBI against NYU… In four appearances in the circle last week, Mary Washington's Caitlyn Burch tossed a total of 21 innings, recording three wins and a cumulative 1.33 ERA. The senior recorded 24 total strikeouts to just two walks, which included a pair of complete games -- one in a win over Randolph, the other against Gettysburg.
