SU’s Mace, CNU’s Martin Earn C2C Softball Players of the Week

The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) has announced its weekly awards following the ninth week of the 2024 softball season.  Salisbury's Abby Mace claimed C2C Player of the Week honors, while Christopher Newport's Jamie Martin was tabbed C2C Pitcher of the Week.


PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Abby Mace, Salisbury

Mace put up otherworldly numbers in the Sea Gulls' sweeps of Ursinus and York, slashing .727/.813/1.818 with three doubles, three homers, eight runs, eight RBIs, two steals, and a 2.631 OPS. Mace homered twice in the nightcap against Ursinus on Saturday, breaking the Salisbury program record with her 53rd career blast in the second inning.


PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Jamie Martin, Christopher Newport

Martin won both of her starts this week on the road for the Captains and didn't allow a run in two victories. She threw a seven-inning shutout at North Carolina Wesleyan, striking out 11, and tossed six innings of shutout ball at Mary Washington while striking out eight. She is now 7-1 on the year, and her scoreless innings streak has reached 24.

C2C HIGHLIGHTS

In four games, Brianna Mendez had four hits in eight at bats, highlighted in two Mount Mary wins over Maranatha Baptist… Candace Slaw recorded seven hits in 16 at bats this week (.438), and stole four bases and scored twice as Christopher Newport won all four of their contests. CNU's leadoff hitter helped set the table for a week that saw the ninth-ranked Captains out-score North Carolina Wesleyan and Mary Washington in doubleheader sweeps by a combined score of 26-4… Mary Washington's Emily Angel recorded six hits in 16 at-bats (.375) to go along with a double and a homer in a 9-0 victory over Stevenson… Mary Washington's Caitlyn Burch tossed a total of 15.2 innings in five appearances with a 1.79 ERA and 18 strikeouts. In a 9-0 win over Stevenson, Burch tossed three innings of a five-inning combined perfect game, recording five strikeouts and the win. In six innings against No. 9 Christopher Newport, Burch yielded two earned runs in six innings, while striking out six… Nicole Ortega won both of her starts with a 1.17 ERA during Salisbury's sweeps of Ursinus and York over the weekend. Ortega pitched six scoreless innings and struck out six to beat Ursinus on Saturday. On Sunday against York, she went six more innings and gave up just two earned runs while fanning seven.
