Marymount Senior Maame Amponsah Picked As CAC Women's Basketball Player Of The Week

Marymount senior forward MAAME AMPONSAH (Beltsville, Md./Lanham Christian) was named the CAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after posting a pair of double-doubles and helping the Saints clinch the No. 2 seed in the CAC tournament. Amponsah, a three-time weekly award winner this season, averaged 12 points and 14 rebounds in wins over Frostburg State and Stevenson. She drained 11-of-19 (57.9%) from the field and added five assists, four blocked shots and a steal in the two outings.

Wesley senior forward ANGIE OWENS (Seaford, Del./Seaford) was named CAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after posting double-doubles in both road games this week, lifting the Wolverines into fifth place in the CAC. Owens dropped in 14 points, grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds to become the school’s career-rebounding record holder, and added two blocked shots and two steals in a six-point win at Stevenson. She then contributed 12 points, equaled the season-high 15 rebounds and added three blocks, an assist and a steal in Saturday’s three-point win at Frostburg State.

Mary Washington junior guard JENNA McRAE (Springfield, Va./Annandale) was named CAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after registering a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds in Saturday’s victory at St. Mary’s that solidified UMW’s lead in the CAC standings. McRae drained 75% of her two-point attempts from the field (9-for-12) and all three of her free throw attempts.

Sisco’s key performance was in Salisbury’s overtime win at St. Mary’s, where she scored a career-high 23 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and contributed six steals, helping the Sea Gulls climb back into the CAC playoff chase.

Hood senior guard ALLYSON LETHBRIDGE (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) was named CAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season after averaging 23.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in a pair of victories last week. The Blazers, winners of three of their last four, reached the .500 level in overall record and climbed back into the CAC playoff chase. Lethbridge dropped in a career-best five long-range shots on the way to 20 points in a mid-week victory at York, the first time since joining the CAC that Hood topped the Spartans. In that game, she became the fifth player in team history to reach the century mark for career treys. Saturday, Lethbridge matched her career-high with 26 points in a non-conference win at Division II Washington Adventist.

Frostburg State senior center MINDY SHARP (Marlinton, W.Va./Pocahontas County) was named CAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 10, 2011, after averaging 15.5 points, 12.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and leading the Bobcats to a pair of CAC victories and into playoff contention. Among her three double-doubles in the week were a 15-point, 14-rebound, seven assist and three blocked shots effort at Wesley, followed by 16 points and 11 boards in a weekend home victory against Salisbury. She shot 17-for-36 from the field (47.2%), including a three-pointer at Wesley in her only long-distance try of the season, and 11-for-13 (84.6%) from the free throw line.

Marymount senior guard AMANDA BILLY (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers) was named CAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 3, 2011, after averaging 25.7 points and leading the Saints to two wins in three games during the holiday break. Billy dropped in 21 points, one point shy of half of MU’s offensive total, in a two-point triumph over TCNJ. After scoring 14 points in a three-point loss to Manhattanville, Billy drained 11 bombs (giving her 19 for the holidays) on the way to a 42-point performance in a three-point win over Staten Island. In addition to shooting 44.1% from the field and 43.2% from long range, she contributed 13 rebounds, eight steals, four assists and three blocked shots in the three games.

Wesley senior center ANGIE OWENS (Seaford, Del./Seaford) was named CAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 20, 2010, after contributing a pair of double-doubles in two victories last week, including a CAC triumph over Stevenson. Owens contributed 18 points and 13 boards against the Mustangs, then added 12 points, 11 caroms and four blocked shots in limited time during a 17-point win over Keystone. Owens, who has six double-doubles this season, averaged 15 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocked shots and shot 50% from the field (13-for-26) in two games this week.

Marymount senior forward MAAME AMPONSAH (Beltsville, Md./Lanham Christian School) was named CAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 13, 2010, after averaging 17.5 points, 17.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.5 blocks and shot 58.3% from the field in a pair of CAC road wins last week. Amponsah piled up 20 points and 19 rebounds in a mid-week win at Salisbury, then recorded a pair of 15s - points and rebounds - in Saturday’s one-point victory at arch-rival Mary Washington. She hit 7-of 12 field goal attempts in both games as the Saints moved into a tie for second place.

She also posted 24 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks and five steals as the Wolverines’ mid-week rally at York fell short.

Salisbury sophomore forward KATIE McGAHAGAN (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) was named CAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for Nov. 29, 2010, after scoring 14 points and ripping down 25 rebounds, both career highs, in the Sea Gulls’ overtime victory against CAC rival Stevenson. McGahagan, who also had career-highs of four steals and 44 minutes played against the Mustangs, keyed the OT period victory with six points and six boards in the extra frame.

Hood senior guard ALLYSON LETHBRIDGE was named CAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for Nov. 22, 2010, after leading the Blazers to their first regular-season tournament title in the team’s recorded history (15 years). In earning all-tournament recognition, Lethbridge averaged 15.0 points on .361 field goal percentage,.454 three-point percentage and 76.5 free throw percentage and added 4.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists. She also moved into ninth place on Hood’s career scoring list.
