Playoff Pairings Set As Top Four CAC Women's Basketball Teams All Win Wednesday

With one game to play, the 2012 CAC women's basketball playoff pairings are set thanks to wins Wednesday by the top four teams in the standings - 7th-ranked and undefeated Mary Washington, second-place York, third-place Salisbury and fourth-place Marymount.

Mary Washington (24-0, 15-0 CAC) ran away for a 64-30 win over visiting Stevenson (10-14, 5-10 CAC).  UMW is the top seed for the playoffs, meaning they drew a bye in the opening round on Tuesday (2/21) and will host a semifinal game at 6 p.m. on Thursday (2/23).  Stevenson gained the No. 6 seed for the playoff tournament.

Second-place York (20-4, 13-2 CAC) topped visiting Wesley (6-18, 3-12 CAC) by an 85-46 margin and, like UMW, will have a first-round playoff bye and host a 7 p.m. semifinal contest on Thursday (2/23).

Third-place Salisbury (14-9, 11-4 CAC), which had already clinched its first home playoff game since 2003, stopped Hood (6-18, 2-4 CAC) by a 62-38 count.  The Sea Gulls will host Stevenson in Tuesday's first-round playoff action (7 p.m.), with the winner headed to York for the semifinal round.

Fourth-place Marymount (12-12, 9-6 CAC) locked up a home playoff game with a 78-69 victory at Frostburg State (5-19, 3-12 CAC).  The Saints will host fifth-place St. Mary's in the first round Tuesday (7 p.m.), with the winner advancing to the semifinal round at top-seeded UMW.

Fifth-place St. Mary's (9-15, 7-8 CAC) had a bye Wednesday.

At Mary Washington, the seventh-ranked Eagles moved to within one win of a perfect regular season with a 64-30 win over Stevenson. Senior guard Jenna McRae led the way with 16 points for the Eagles, now 24-0 overall and 15-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play.  McRae was the only Eagle in double figures. Seniors Rachel Martin and Katie Wimmer each scored nine points, with Wimmer adding five steals. Junior Carol Dye also scored nine points to go with a team-high seven rebounds.  Sam Murray had 13 points for the Mustangs.

At York, the host Spartans raced out to a 21-point halftime lead and never looked back against Wesley in a re-match of the 2011 CAC Championship Game.  Four YCP starters finished in double digits in the scoring column, including sophomores Brittany Hicks (22 pts.), Kristen Haley (18 pts.), senior April Sparkman (17 pts.) and sophomore Kelsey Murphy (12 pts.).  Hicks finished with 17 rebounds for a double-double while sophomore point guard Aja Wallpher dished out 14 of YCP's 29 assists.  Jazmine Miller led Wesley with 17 points while dishing out five assists and swiping four balls.  Heather Fuller was the only other Wolverine in double figures with 13 points.

At Salisbury, Katie McGahagan and Nicole Sisco posted double-doubles as the host Sea Gulls won their third-straight game, downing Hood 62-38.  McGahagan tallied a team-best 15 points and shared team-high rebounding honors with Sisco, each with 12 caroms.  Sisco tied Anna Hackett for second on the team in scoring, each with 14 markers.  Whitney Kolakowski also knocked down 10 points for the winners.  Jessica Talley paced the Blazers with 12 points.

At Frostburg, Marymount wrapped up the road portion of its regular season schedule with a 78-69 victory over the Bobcats.  Four Saints scored in double-figures led by Katelyn Fischer with a game-high 25 points.  Jackie Bohenek, Dominique Dickens and Julie Tomesheski each added 13 while Tynisha Parks grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.  Elaina Hummel led the Bobcats with 18 points while Elizabeth Erickson added 17 and Stephanie Straka had 12.  Erickson tallied a double-double with 13 boards.
