Marymount Tops Christopher Newport for CAC Women's Basketball Regular Season Title; CAC Tournament Pairing Set

2016 CAC Women's Basketball Tournament Bracket

Marymount captured the CAC women's basketball regular season title for the 10th time in program history with a 52-46 road win at No. 16 Christopher Newport on Saturday. The win gives the Saints (21-4, 16-2) the top seed and homecourt advantage in the CAC Tournament, while the Captains (22-3, 15-3) will be the No. 2 seed. The loss snapped a 17-game winning streak for CNU.

Both the Saints and Captains earned first-round byes with their top-two seedings and will host semifinal matchups on Thursday night.

Tuesday's first round matchups will feature No. 4 York (19-6, 13-5) hosting No. 5 Salisbury (13-12, 9-9) at 6 p.m. in York, Pa., and No. 6 St. Mary's (8-17, 6-12) at No. 3 Mary Washington (21-4, 15-3) at 6 p.m. in Fredericksburg, Va.

Next week's playoffs will feature the same six CAC squads for the third year in a row.

York closed out its regular season with a 101-79 home win over Southern Virginia on Saturday, while Salisbury posted a home win in similar fashion, downing Frostburg State 76-46.

Despite a 63-58 setback to Wesley on Saturday, St. Mary's claimed the sixth and final playoff spot based on head-to-head tiebreakers over Penn State Harrisburg and Wesley, who all boasted 6-12 in-conference marks.

Mary Washington, ranked 25th in the nation, posted a 67-49 victory at Penn State Harrisburg to dash the Lions' playoff hopes. The Eagles will carry a three-game winning streak into the postseason.
