Top-seeded Mary Washington and second-seeded Salisbury are headed to another CAC Women's Tennis Tournament championship showdown Friday in Fredericksburg, Va., after each posted a shutout victory in Tuesday's semifinal round.
UMW downed fourth-seeded St. Mary's for the second time in a week by a 9-0 margin while the Sea Gulls topped York, also by a 9-0 count.
The Eagles and Gulls will meet for the title for the sixth-straight year since the round-robin regular-season schedule and six-team, single-elimination post-season tournament were added in 1006. UMW has won all five previous championship meetings, including three by 9-0 scores. Last year, Salisbury fell by a 7-2 count.
At UMW, the Eagles won the doubles matches by a combined score of 16-1 and added a forfeit at No. 3 doubles. The Eagles then won the top five singles matches in straight sets, including four by shutout, and added another forfeit at No. 6 singles.
At Salisbury, the match was the final home contest for
seniors Angela Tenaglia and Amy
Matonak; Tenaglia teamed up with sophomore Jillian
Poppe at No. 1 doubles to earn an 8-1 win, and then
proceeded to take a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles.
Tenaglia has certainly left her mark on the Sea Gull women's tennis
program – her 34-4 singles record ranks her second in program
history (by victories). Additionally, Tenaglia's 89.4% win
percentage in singles play gives her the best career singles record
(by percentage). Matonak, who donned a maroon and gold
uniform for the first time this season, currently boasts a 5-1
singles record and 5-0 doubles record.
