Marymount University has named Kate Athing as its new head women’s lacrosse coach, as announced by Director of Athletics Debbie Warren on Monday.  She is the sixth head coach in program history and begins her duties on June 9.

Athing previously spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach with the Saints.  She replaces Jamie Reynolds, who was recently promoted to Associate Director of Athletics/Director of Athletics Advancement.

With Athing on the sidelines, she helped transition a team that went 3-11 the year before she arrived to an 8-8 record in 2014 – its best season since 2008.  A total of eight Saints garnered All-CAC honors including 2011 CAC Rookie of the Year Megan McGuirk.

Athing joined the Saints staff after a four year playing career at Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  A four year starter for the Crimson Hawks, Athing was named to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West team as a senior captain in 2010. She garnered IUP Defensive Player of the Season accolades as a junior and senior and was selected to the Senior All-Star South Team. A standout in the classroom as well, Athing earned PSAC Scholar-Athlete recognition all four years with the Crimson Hawks.

Athing graduated from IUP in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She completed her Master’s of Education in English as a Second Language at Marymount in 2012 and was also an ESOL teacher in Fairfax County.
