INTRODUCING ... Christopher Newport Women's Lacrosse Senior Sam Puglisi

Christopher Newport senior women’s lacrosse midfielder Sam Puglisi is a self-described “biology nerd” who has recently been accepted to Old Dominion University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) graduate school. Puglisi has a variety of unique interests and viewpoints that likely differ from the majority of her generation. She and Captains are riding an eight-game winning streak into today’s non-conference matchup against Roanoke. INTRODUCING … Sam Puglisi.

Briefly, what is your background in the sport you play?

I was originally a soccer player for the majority of my life, then was introduced to lacrosse my freshman year of high school and fell in love with the sport. I started off playing defense because I am very protective-minded, then slowly progressed into the midfield so I could help my teammates anywhere on the field.

What is your major in college, and what is the most important thing you learned in that discipline?

I am Biology (B.S.): Cellular, Molecular, and Organismal. The bio major has taught me that consistent hard work and disciple are integral to success.

What is your favorite spot on campus?

Forbes Hall, because that’s where all my bio major friends tend to hang out and study together. Also, no matter which room you enter, there is always something interesting to look at on the walls or in the labs.

Outside of your home and campus, where is your favorite place visit?

I frequently visit the Banque in Norfolk, I love to country line dance and swing dance!

Other than your team, what organization (s) do you participate in?

I am involved in SAAC and I’m also the co-President of the Physical Therapy Club at CNU. I was recently accepted to Old Dominion University’s DPT graduate school.

Briefly describe the most memorable experience during your collegiate athletic career.

As of right now, the win over Mary Washington last season was the most exciting point in my athletic career at CNU; however I believe the best moments are going to be during this upcoming season.

What is the most important societal issue facing college students?

I believe that most college students today do not understand the gift of higher education. In a country that emphasizes education it is easy to take it for granted, however I believe students should take a step back and realize how lucky they are to be given an opportunity to receive an advanced education.

If you could change any one item in the world (in your personal life, school, community, amateur or professional sports, national/international issue, etc.), what would it be, why, and how would you do it?

I wish that people could interact personally with each other more, rather than being chained to social media. In the real world, true connections are made face-to-face rather than over a screen, so the ability to communicate without the use of technology is a valuable social skill. I make an effort every day to engage with the people around me whenever I am in a social setting, which in turn encourages others to do the same.

Other than your family members, who was the most influential person in your life?

A really good family friend of ours, Mr. Greg Guy has always been an inspiration and role model for me. No matter what sport I played, what season I was in, or what issue I was going through, he was always there supporting me. I can still remember struggling to find success during my first few seasons at CNU, and Mr. Guy motivated me to find my role on the team and work every day to fill that role to the best of my ability.

What is your favorite form of entertainment?

Netflix. Whenever I get the chance to wind down and relax, I love to watch New Girl, Sons of Anarchy, TED Talks, and just about any Disney movie on there.

What is your favorite source of information (TV, book, magazine, website, friends in dining hall, etc.)?

I typically default to getting my information through the internet. As a biology nerd, I also like to look up random facts online or watch documentaries for fun.

If you could give one piece of advice to elementary school children, what would that advice be?

Follow your heart. Try new things and find what you are truly passionate about.

Outside of the Capital Athletic Conference, who or what is your favorite sports person or team?

The rugby team, the New Zealand All Blacks. I have always been inspired by their combination of passion for the sport and humility. After each game, each member of the All Blacks “sweep the sheds” meaning they all return to the locker room together to clean it as a sign of respect and humility.

Name three (3) people, real or fictional, living or dead, that you'd like to have dinner with ?

1. Albert Einstein- I would just love to sit down, have intellectual conversation with him, and listen to his thought process

2. Eric Thomas- He is my favorite motivational speaker; His passion and energy is contagious, I listen to his speeches before every game.

3. My family- Nothing in the world beats a good meal with the people that you love most.
