CNU’s Winters, Morrison Collect C2C Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week Awards

The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) has announced its weekly awards following the seventh week of the 2024 women's lacrosse season. Christopher Newport's Kelsey Winters captured C2C Offensive Player of the Week honors, while the Captains Brookelyn Morrison was named C2C Defensive Player of the Week.


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kelsey Winters, Christopher Newport

Winters led Christopher Newport to a pair of wins last week while posting a team-high 15 points. On Wednesday during a 20-8 victory over St. Mary's (Md.), she notched seven points, including a season-high four goals. Among her highlights, she deposited the game's first two strikes while giving the Captains an early lead that they would never relinquish. Three days later, she came back with a historic appearance during a 20-3 win over Meredith. Against the Avenging Angels, she handed out eight assists, which equaled the fourth-highest total in program history. Six of her helpers came in the first half, including four on CNU's first six goals, as the squad built a commanding lead on the way to the lopsided triumph.


DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brookelyn Morrison, Christopher Newport

Morrison continued to star on the midfield unit while leading Christopher Newport with eight caused turnovers and 19 draw controls during a pair of appearances last week. During a 20-8 win over St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday, she controlled possession while keeping the ball away from the Seahawks. On the back end, she notched three takeaways while also securing 11 draws, which established a new personal-best and equaled the 10th-most by a Captain in school history. Three days later, she came back with five more takeaways. Four of her strips immediately led to goals on the other end, including three in the first half. Meanwhile, she came through with eight draw controls, including four in the first quarter as the hosts built a quick 4-0 lead on the way to the win. During the week, she also chipped in on the offensive end with seven points, including five assists.

C2C HIGHLIGHTS

Grace Doyle was a consistent offensive threat for Salisbury, logging five goals on five shots across games against No. 2 William Smith and No. 22 Chicago in the week. Doyle also tallied five draw controls and caused one turnover in the two-game span… Senior All-America attacker Katie Blair led Mary Washington to a split this week, scoring five goals and adding five assists. In a 10-9 loss at nationally ranked Shenandoah on Wednesday, Blair scored a pair of goals and added an assist, and in a 15-13 win over Messiah on Saturday, the senior led the way with three goals and four assists. She also scored three crucial draw controls late in the fourth quarter, as the Eagles overcame a two-goal deficit to top the Falcons. She leads the Eagles with 21 goals this season… Warren Wilson's Isabella Mizzoni played full minutes at Truett-McConnell, mostly in the midfield. Her speed in transitions helped the Owls gain possession in the offensive end and she scored her first ever career goal, in addition to 6 ground balls… Natalie Held spearheaded the Salisbury defense through ranked matchups against No. 2 William Smith and No. 22 Chicago in the week. She totaled seven ground balls and six draw controls in the two games while forcing five errors as well. Held has forced multiple turnovers in six games this season including each of the last three… Warren Wilson's Callie Aerni played full minutes at Truett-McConnell, mostly in the midfield. She stepped in to take draw controls and had a career best eight ground balls. She also had one goal and one CT.
