INTRODUCING ... Christopher Newport Women's Soccer Scoring Leader Emma O'Reilly

Senior striker Emma O’Reilly is a three-time conference all-star and a goal-scoring machine for the Christopher Newport women’s soccer team.  She is second on the team in goals (10) and points (24) this season, and she is the team record holder for career goals and points heading into Saturday’s 2013 CAC Championship match against York.  She also hopes to teach history when her soccer career is over, and she’d be following her own advice to her future students – follow your dream.  INTRODUCING … Emma O’Reilly.

Briefly, what is your background in the sport you play?   I have been playing soccer since I was five years old.  I started playing rec league until I was 11 and then moved to a travel team called SYC Liberty, where I played until I came to CNU.  I also played for the Super Y team Majestic’s during the summer.

What is your major in college, and what is the most important thing you learned in that discipline?  My major is sociology with a focus of criminology.

Outside of your home and campus, where is your favorite place visit?   My favorite place to visit would be Sandbridge in Virginia Beach.  My family usually takes a vacation there every summer.

Briefly describe the most memorable experience during your collegiate athletic career.   The most memorable experience would be breaking the record for most career goals at CNU.  It was so nice to be rewarded after working hard.  I also have to say that it was only possible with the help of my team.

What is the most important societal issue facing college students?  I believe that would be acceptance.  Many people tell you when you go to college you will find your true friends, but I still think there is an issue of people not being accepted for who they are and not to be discriminated against.

If you could change any one item in the world (in your personal life, school, community, amateur or professional sports, national/international issue, etc.), what would it be, why, and how would you do it?   Discrimination.  Although it is frowned upon it still happens too often in all aspects of the world, including sports.

If you could give one piece of advice to elementary school children, what would that advice be?   Always follow your dream and don’t ever tell anyone you can’t do something.  If you put your mind to it and work hard anything is possible.

Outside of the Capital Athletic Conference, who or what is your favorite sports person or team?   My favorite sports team would be Liverpool because my dad and I watch the games together whenever possible.  My favorite player is Steven Gerrard who plays for them.  He is my favorite player because he always works hard and is a good leader.
