Mary Washington and York Advance to CAC Women's Soccer Semifinals

Mary Washington and York both advanced to the semifinals of the CAC Women's Soccer Tournament on Saturday. UMW edged Salisbury 3-2 in penalty kicks following a scoreless regulation and overtime, while York blanked Frostburg State 2-0. 

In Salisbury, Md., fifth-seeded Mary Washington outlasted fourth-seeded Salisbury 3-2 in a penalty kick shootout. In the definition of an evenly contested game, both teams drew nine shots through 110 minutes of scoreless regulation and two overtimes. The Eagles advance to the semifinals for the fifth straight year with the penalty kick victory. 

In the shootout, both teams missed their first two chances, before Salisbury's Rachel Anderson scored in the third round to break the ice. UMW's Leah Roth answered to tie the best-of-five series, and then Salisbury's Victoria Luc missed, setting up UMW's Marisa Madaras, who connected to put UMW up, 2-1. In the final pairing, Christine Clark connected for SU to tie the score, but the Eagles' Kaitlyn Higgins scored by caroming her shot off the goalpost and in to clinch advancement for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will visit top-seeded Christopher Newport on Wednesday in the conference semifinals. Game time has yet to be announced.

In Frostburg, Md., sixth-seeded York came through with the second road upset of the day, shutting out third-seeded Frostburg State 2-0. The Spartans received scores from Maxine Herman in the 15th minute and Caitlin Rankin in the 51st minute to secure the victory. 

With the win, York advances to the semifinals and will travel to second-seeded St. Mary's for Tuesday's semifinals.
