Christopher Newport Women's Soccer Edged by Lynchburg in NCAA Second Round

NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament Bracket

Christopher Newport saw its historic season come to a close with a 2-1 loss to Lynchburg in the second round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament on Sunday night at Captains Field in Newport News, Va.

With the loss, the Captains close the year at 19-1-1. CNU's 19 wins mark the second most in CAC history, just one shy of Salisbury's record of 20 wins in 2000. The Captains also broke the conference recording for longest winning streak, running off 17-straight victories until today's loss to the Hornets.

After a scoreless first half, Lynchburg found the back of the net first in the 55th minute on a left-footed strike from 25 yards out from Caitlin Mertens. The Hornets extended the lead to 2-0 in the 73rd minute on score from Rachel Cooke.

The Captains pulled within a 2-1 deficit on a penalty kick from Keiley McCarthy in the 84th minute, but were unable to find the equalizer in the closing minutes of the contest.
