Frostburg State Upends York In Opening Round Of CAC Women's Tennis Tournament; Bobcats Advance To Semifinals With St. Mary's

Frostburg State pulled off a road win Saturday in the opening round of the 2012 CAC Women's Tennis playoffs when the 5th-seeded Bobcats defeated fourth-seeded York, 6-3. 

Also advancing to the CAC semifinals was third-seeded St. Mary's, which topped sixth-seeded Stevenson, 6-3.

FSU advances to Monday's tournament semifinal match at top-seeded Mary Washington while SMC will travel to Salisbury for the other semifinal clash.  The tournament championship is scheduled for Thursday (4/26) at the home courts of the highest seeded team.

At York, Frostburg State collected four singles and two doubles victories to earn a 6-3 win over York (Pa.) in the opening round of the CAC Women's Tennis Tournament. The Bobcats (6-9) advance to the second round and will face top-seeded Mary Washington on Monday.  Junior Megan Martin, sophomore Amber Beckman and freshman Megan Crowl earned two wins each to help propel the Bobcats to the victory. Martin won No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-1 over Katelyn Acker, Beckman took down Samantha Brenner 6-4, 6-4 in No. 3 singles, while Crowl grabbed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Megan McCullin at No. 2 singles.  Martin joined freshman Nicole Absher for a victory in the top doubles flight by a score of 8-5 over the team of Acker and Brenner. Crowl and Beckman teamed for an 8-1 victory over McCullin and Emily Price in the second doubles flight.

At St. Mary's City, Md., the third-seeded Seahawks are moving on to their fifth consecutive CAC Women's Tennis Championship Tournament semifinal match with Saturday's 6-3 victory over sixth-seeded Stevenson in first round action.  St. Mary's (15-6) will now face second-seeded Salisbury in the semifinals on Monday, April 23 at 4:00 pm at Salisbury.  The tandem of junior Shelby Mullennix and first-year Emily Stumpfig posted an 8-1 victory over sophomore Katie Fersch and first-year Svetlana Widell at No. 3 doubles to give St. Mary's (15-6) a 1-0 lead in the match.  Junior Chelsea Bradcovich and sophomore Alexa Gaul followed suit with their 8-4 win over senior Stephanie Eyler and junior Susannah Hoblitzell at No. 1 doubles for a 2-0 Seahawk advantage.  Stevenson (6-9) cut the deficit to 2-1 as the duo of junior Megan Heagy and sophomore Jordan Rupard picked up an 8-4 triumph over sophomore Alyssa Stine and first-year Lauren Rost at the second doubles flight.  Senior Kathleen Ramsey returned a two-point lead to the Seahawks with her straight set victory of 6-0, 6-0 over Widell at No. 4 singles.  Gaul made it a 4-1 St. Mary's advantage with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hoblitzell at No. 1 singles before Eyler closed the gap to 4-2 with her 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Stumpfig at No. 2 singles.  Rost notched the decisive point as she put the Seahawks ahead 5-2 with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Fersch at the fifth singles flight.  St. Mary's sixth point came at No. 6 singles as Bradcovich came up with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Heagy before Rupard posted a 5-7, 7-5, 10-2 win over Stine at No. 3 singles, avenging her regular-season three-set loss to Stine.
