FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior Justin Cerny was selected as the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this year on April 17, 2018.

Christopher Newport senior Justin Cerny was selected as the CAC Player of the Week for the second time this year after winning all four of his matches as the Captains went 2-0 and secured the No. 2 seed in this year's CAC Tournament. Against Salisbury, Cerny downed Ian Siew at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-3) and paired with David Reed for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles against Siew and Colt Williamson. Against St. Mary's, Cerny played at No. 1 singles, beating Jon Gorel (6-0, 6-1) and also paired with James Baron for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Gorel and Ethan Garren. He moved up to second all-time in career doubles victories at CNU and is now tied for eighth in singles wins.

In the ITA National Team Rankings, Mary Washington is ranked No. 12 and Christopher Newport is No. 36 ... In the ITA Atlantic South Regional rankings, UMW is No. 3, CNU is No. 8 and Salisbury is No. 15 ... Three CAC players are ranked in the ITA Atlantic South Region singles rankings - UMW's Matt Miles is No. 9, CNU's David Reed is No. 13, and UMW's Patrick Hughes is No. 15 ... Three doubles teams are ranked in the ITA Atlantic South Region doubles rankings - UMW's Michael Fleming / Ryland Byrd are No. 4, CNU's Justin Cerny / David Reed are No. 5, and UMW's Derek Hagino / Patrick Hughes are No. 14 ... Frostburg State junior Shasta Braithwaite posted a 4-0 record last week in two matches. He won both his No. 1 singles matches against Penn State Altoona and Penn State Harribsurg, and also collected two No. 1 doubles wins ... Sophomore Joseph Brown won a pair of singles matches and his lone doubles match this weekend as No. 12 Mary Washington defeated St. Mary's and Franklin & Marshall, 9-0. He scored a 6-3, 6-4 win at two singles in the victory over F&M, and added a 6-1, 6-1 win at three singles and teamed with Ryan Berry for an 8-0 win at three doubles in a win over St. Mary's. He is 12-3 on the spring in singles play and 5-2 in doubles action ... Penn State Harrisburg's Austin Stehman picked up a key singles win in the Lions match up with Frostburg State, helping them to pick up the conference win. Sherman won his No. 6 singles match 7-4, 4-6, 6-4 ... Salisbury sophomore Matthew Ryan went 3-1 in his four matches against regionally-ranked No. 8 Christopher Newport and regionally-ranked No. 16 TCNJ. Against CNU, Ryan earned a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles for Salisbury's only point and just dropped the doubles match, falling 8-6 at No. 2 with playing partner Patrick MacLean. Against TCNJ, Ryan won 6-1, 6-1 in singles while he and MacLean won 8-6 in doubles play as the Sea Gulls claimed a narrow 5-4 win ... Southern Virginia sophomore Ben Spencer went 4-0 last week in wins over Randolph-Macon and York.
