The No. 2 Salisbury University field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey tournament on Sunday afternoon. Ursinus College scored the game winner five minutes into overtime to earn the win.

In the first half, both teams saw plenty of opportunities to take the lead but the defensive units held strong, preventing any goals.

The maroon and gold's defense, consisting of seniors Tara McGovern, Shannon Hanratty and junior Amber Holland, put a stop to the Bears' offensive progress whenever the ball passed the 25-yard line, keeping Ursinus to only one shot and three penalty corners. Ursinus' Alyssa Thren had a one-on-one opportunity late in the first half that was thwarted by Hanratty, keeping the score tied going into halftime.

Salisbury (18-2) dominated the second half, taking 16 shots and 14 penalty corners while the defense held Ursinus (19-3) to no shots or corner opportunities.

With 20 minutes remaining in the contest, it looked as though the Sea Gulls would break the tie. Senior Courtney Webster collected a ball that slipped past the Bears' goalkeeper but Katie McEwen was there to make the defensive save and keep the game scoreless.

In the overtime period, senior goalkeeper Anna Cooke made an initial save to ward off a shot from Ursinus. Holland was there to make the defensive save for the second shot and keep the Gulls' chances alive. But late in the 74th minute, Thren had a breakaway and dished the ball off to Corinne Freeman, who sent in the game-winning goal.

Salisbury finished with a 27-3 edge in shots and 20-5 advantage in penalty corners for the game. Ursinus goalkeeper Jill Lukens recorded 12 saves in the victory.
