Mary Washington Captures The CAC Field Hockey Crown For The Second Time In Three Years With 4-2 Win Over Wesley

Mary Washington captured its second CAC field hockey championship in the last three years with a 4-2 victory over Wesley, ensuring the regular-season champs a berth in the 2012 NCAA Championship Tournament.

The Eagles, improving to 18-1 overall, secured their fifth crown in the 21-year history of the CAC.  UMW will learn its NCAA fate Monday when the national championship tournament pairings are announced.

Wesley opened the scoring, but the hosts battled back to take a 2-1 lead.  The Wolverines tied the match early in the second half on a Madison Leone score.

Mary Washington senior Lisa Charney's second goal of the game, in the 61st minute, proved to be the game-winner, and Amy Abernathy added an insurance tally in the final minute to clinch the win.
