Wesley Upsets Second-Ranked Salisbury To Earn Its Third-Straight Trip To The CAC Field Hockey Title Match Saturday At Mary Washington
For the second time in three years, unranked Wesley knocked off nationally-ranked Salisbury in the CAC field hockey semifinals on the Gulls' home field.
Two years ago, Wesley edged Salisbury by a 1-0 margin in a defensive gem. This time, the third-seeded Wolverines needed three rounds of a penalty shootout to outlast the second-ranked and second-seeded hosts and pick up a 4-3 shootout victory, earning a trip to top-seeded Mary Washington to play for the conference crown Saturday.
Fifth-ranked and top-seeded Mary Washington took care of business at home, besting fifth-seeded St. Mary's by a 5-1 count.
It'll be the second time in the last three years Wesley travels to Mary Washington for the championship contest. UMW won the 2010 title with a 4-1 win, and Wesley fell at Salisbury in the 2011 championship match by a 5-1 score.
