Wesley SAAC President Morgan Seymour Recaps Recent Attendance At NCAA Convention

DOVER, Del. – Wesley College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President Morgan Seymour attended the NCAA Convention in Washington, D.C. this past weekend. Seymour is a dual-sport athlete for the Wolverines, starting for both the field hockey and softball programs at Wesley. Seymour sat down with GoWesleyAthletics.com for a brief Q&A.

1. Describe your experience at the NCAA Convention and what images you had going in, and how they have changed after attending.

My experience at the NCAA Convention was unlike anything I have ever been a part of. I honestly didn't know what to expect upon first arriving, but after the first opening business session where I was able to hear the President of the NCAA, Mark Emmert, speak about the importance of athletics and education across all three divisions. I was also able to join in on a roundtable discussion with multiple AD'S, SWA'S, and Coaches from all over the U.S. to voice my opinion and vote in a straw poll on budget concerns, sportsmanship, the non-traditional segment, and many other controversial topics that effect every level in the Division III membership.

2. In the SAAC meetings, what did other schools say about their organizations? What kind of ideas did you bring back with you from them?

When I attended the SAAC meeting I was able to meet all of the Division III SAAC members that attended the convention which was probably my favorite part of the convention; getting to meet other student-athletes just like me and talking about our concerns on our own campus, as well as, within our SAAC organizations. Everyone was so friendly and willing to help one another with ideas and assistance in starting up a SAAC organization. During our meeting we also were able to meet and speak with the members of the national SAAC members, it's awesome to know that the members of the NCAA truly does give student-athletes a voice in the legislation that is written. They want to know our opinions, what we like, what should be changed, etc. I'm excited as President of the SAAC here at Wesley to really kick start the program and hopefully encourage our student athletes to gain a better understanding of the organization and how they can use their voice to make change within the Wesley Campus and more.

3. Would you suggest to others that they attend? If so, why?

I would absolutely encourage anyone who is given the chance to go. There were over 3,000 people in attendance this year. The ability to network with other student-athletes and meet possible future employers is a chance no one should pass up. That, in combination with the amazing venue where everything took place is an experience I will always be grateful for along with many thanks to the Capital Athletic Conference commissioner, Tom Byrnes, Wesley Athletic Director, Coach Mike Drass and Associate Athletic Director, Coach Tracey Short. I would love to attend another convention if given the opportunity again.
