St. Mary's Men, Mary Washington Women Both Advance To NCAA Div. III Hoop Sweet 16
The St. Mary's College men's basketball team continued its improbable post-season journey while the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third-straight years as both posted NCAA Championship Tournament basketball victories Saturday.
Competing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history, the St. Mary's men's basketball team (19-11) downed Widener, 83-74, in Saturday's second-round game at Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C. Calvin Wise poured in a game-high 21 points while Alex Irmer added 20 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds to lead the Seahawks.
SMC, which finished fourth in the CAC regular season but earned a bid to the national championship tournament by winning its first CAC crown since 1991, will play either Millsaps or Mary Hardin-Baylor next Friday (3/14) at a site to be determined in the men's Sweet 16.
On the women's side, Mary Washington struggled offensively but used its defense to capture a 56-50 victory over the College of New Jersey, advancing to the Sweet 16 for the third-straight year. UMW lost in th Sweet 16 of the 2006 NCAA Tournament, then advanced to the Final Four and won the consolation game of the 2007 championship.
The Eagles (28-2), the CAC regular-season champion and two-time CAC playoff champ (three-times in the last four years), will face Tufts in next Friday's (3/14) third-round contest at a site to be announced.
