Mary Washington And St. Mary's Will Go Down To The Wire For The CAC Men's Basketball Regular-Season Title; Hood Nails Down Final Playoff Berth

While Frostburg State, Wesley and York are scrambling in the battle for a first-round home men's basketball playoff game, two-time defending champion St. Mary's and Mary Washington have clinched the top two seeds and Hood claimed the No. 6 seed for the 2012 conference playoffs.

Mary Washington (17-7, 12-3 CAC) downed Stevenson (6-18, 3-12 CAC), 94-59, to clinch a first-round bye and a home game in the CAC semifinals on Feb. 23.  The Eagles can clinch the top seed in the playoffs with a win Saturday at Wesley or a St. Mary's loss Saturday against Frostburg State.

St. Mary's (18-6, 12-3 CAC) had a bye Wednesday and, like UMW, will have a first-round playoff bye and a home game in the playoff semifinals.  SMC must beat FSU Saturday and hope Wesley beats UMW to gain the top seed and the regular-season crown.  If not, the Seahawks, who lost both games vs. UMW this season, will be the No. 2 seed in the playoffs.

The third, fourth and fifth playoff pairings were jumbled a little Wednesday when Wesley (11-13, 9-6 CAC) rallied for a 68-65 win at York (14-10, 9-6).

Frostburg State (13-11, 10-5 CAC) took advantage of York's loss and moved into sole possession of third place by edging Marymount (5-19, 1-14 CAC), 53-52.  The Bobcats can clinch third place with a win Saturday at SMC.

If FSU loses at SMC, the Bobcats could finish in a two-way tie with either Wesley or York, or all three could tie for third place.  CAC tiebreaker procedures would determine the seedings for the tournament.

Hood clinched the final CAC playoff spot by defeating Salisbury in overtime, 58-49.  The Blazers will be the 6th seed in the tournament and play at the No. 3 seed in Tuesday's first round.

At Mary Washington, the Eagles shot a blistering 55% from the floor en route to a 94-59 win over Stevenson.  UMW was led by senior Tad Dickman, who scored 14 points on 5-6 shooting. Also in double figures were sophomore E.J. Willis and freshman Sean Armstrong, who each scored 13 points. Armstrong and senior Ryan Henderson led UMW with seven rebounds apiece. Bradley Riester scored nine and Mike Harvey and Walt Smith each added eight for the winners. Stevenson was led by Stefon McCray's 11 points.

At York, Wesley's Paul Reynolds showed why he is arguably the best player in the conference as he led the Wolverines to a must-have 68-65 victory.  Reynolds scored 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.  It was his third double-double in the last four games.  The six-foot-four, 245 pound forward did have help as both Rasheed Carter and Devon Davidson had career nights with 11 and 10 points, respectively.  Freshman Nick Guidry also scored ten points off the bench which was one off his season-high.  Mo Oursler (14 pts.), Julian Watson (13 pts.) and Paul Kouvaris (11 pts.) paced the Spartans.

At Frostburg, the host Bobcats struggled to score points down the stretch in the second half, but relied on defense to carry them to a slim 53-52 victory over Marymount.  Senior Maurice Williams led the Bobcats in scoring for the fourth-straight game with 24 points, behind a 12-of-13 effort from the foul line.  The Saints had three players in double figures, led by 13 points from Timothy Brisco. Jesse Konadu had 12 points and John Magnani grabbed 11 rebounds.

At Salisbury, Hood's Justin Stone scored the game-tying bucket with six seconds left in regulation, then added four of his game-high 17 points in overtime to lift the Blazers into the playoffs with a 58-49 win over the Sea Gulls.  Stone also had 10 of his game-high 12 rebounds on the defensive boards to finish with a double-double.  Hood's Lavar Rich was the only other player in the game to scoring in double figures, finishing with 11 points.  Mike Maczko and Jason Nwosu topped Salisbury with eight points each.
