Frostburg State And Wesley Men's Soccer Teams Fall In Opening Round Of ECAC South Tournament

Frostburg State and Wesley each played road games against higher-seeded teams and suffered season-ending first-round losses Wednesday in the 2011 ECAC South Men's Soccer Tournament.
Fifth-seeded Frostburg State (11-3-5) played a 1-1 overtime game at fourth-seeded Swarthmore, but the Bobcats were eliminated from the tournament on a shootout. Eighth-seeded Wesley (8-7-5) was defeated at top-seeded Alvernia by a 3-0 count.
At Swarthmore, Frostburg State had its season come to an end
with a shootout loss to Swarthmore in the first round of the
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament, Wednesday
evening.
The two teams battled through regulation and both overtimes and
could not break a 1-1 tie. The game was then settled on a shootout.
Swarthmore (11-6-1) converted on all four of its attempts while FSU
(11-3-5) made just two of its four chances.
In regulation, the Garnet scored first as David Sterngold headed
home a pass from Michael Superdock in the 25th minute. The
game remained tied until 30 minutes had ticked off the clock in the

Flewellyn notched his third goal of the season at
75:15 to even the contest at 1-1.
Swarthmore tried to retake the lead over the remainder of
regulation, but FSU keeper Abiye
Jack turned away two shots to send it to
overtime. In the extra frames, the Garnet held a 3-2 edge in
shots and Jack added two more saves to keep the contest tied prior
to the shootout.
At Reading, Pa., Alvernia's Josh Wollaston scored twice in the second half as the Crusaders picked up a 3-0 win over Wesley.
Alvernia (16-4-1) struck first as David McEwen scored off a through ball by Domenic Montone. The Wolverines (8-7-5) remained aggressive, outshooting the Crusaders 6-2 in the half, but could not find the back of the net. Wollaston scored twice in less than five minutes early in the second half to break the game open. He took a cross from Eric Franks late in the 55th minute, then scored unassisted early in the 60th minute.
Mark Mattern made four saves for the Wolverines, while Ben Diller stopped as many shots for the Crusaders. Wesley outshot Alvernia 12-10 in the contest. The Crusaders were called for offsides nine times in the contest.
The game marked the end of the 2011 season for the Wolverines. By finishing 8-7-5, Wesley turned in a winning season for the 18th time in the last 22 seasons.
