Four Second-Half Goals Propel Christopher Newport Past Stevens Institute Into Men's Soccer Sweet 16; Penn State Harrisburg Takes Second in ECAC South Tournament

Facing a 2-0 halftime deficit, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team rallied with four second-half goals to post a dramatic come-from-behind victory over visiting Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday evening in Newport News, Va.

The win advances CNU (18-3-4) to the NCAA Sweet 16, where they will meet Whitworth (17-1-3), a 2-0 winner over Berry, next Saturday at a location and time to be determined.

It's the third-straight year, and sixth time in the last nine years, that a CAC men's soccer team has advanced to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16.

Stevens jumped out on top with two scores in the middle portion of the first half, taking a 2-0 edge into the halftime break. After the intermission it was all CNU, however, as the Captains came roaring back.

In the 55th minute, Jalon Brown sent a lofted cross from the left side that was headed off the crossbar and in by Alex Makumbi to pull the Captains within 2-1. CNU tied things up just four minutes later as Patrick Burns finished a bouncing ball in the box following a Makumbi corner kick.

With the momentum squarely in their favor, the Captains took the lead for good in the 74th minute as Zach Douglass buried a Henry Gotay feed for a 3-2 lead. Burns and Brown then combined for the finishing touch on the win, with a beautiful 1-2 combination resulting in Brown's 19th score of the year, giving CNU the final 4-2 margin of victory.

In other postseason action on Sunday, Penn State Harrisburg dropped a 1-0 decision to Misericordia in the ECAC South Championship game in Reading, Pa. The Lions conclude the year at 14-7-2.
