Christopher Newport men's soccer coach Steve
Shaw has been named the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) South-Atlantic Coach of the
Year. Shaw last earned the award in 2011 and collects his fourth
career Region Coach of the Year honor.
Shaw put together one of the finest years in program history
in his 19th year at the helm, leading the Captains to a 19-3-5
overall mark and its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance. CNU captured
the second most wins in a single season and won its first Capital
Athletic Conference Championship in dramatic fashion. The Captains,
seeded fifth in the CAC postseason, ran off three straight road
victories, including a 2-0 shutout over ninth-ranked Salisbury in
the CAC Semifinals, to earn the league title and subsequent
automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Christopher Newport closed out the year ranked No. 7
nationally by the NSCAA after the fourth Elite Eight appearance in
program history. CNU earned a 1-0 win over Lynchburg in the first
round, 4-2 victory against Stevenson in the second and a 3-2 win
over Whitworth in the Sweet 16. After suffering a loss in a penalty
kick shootout in a 2-2 draw with Ohio Wesleyan, the Captains
all-time NCAA record under Coach Shaw is 10-6-4 (.600) in eight
appearances.
Shaw's Captains ranked third nationally in total points and
total goals, setting program records in both categories. He led a
scoring offense that ranked 20th nationally, with 2.74 goals per
game.
For his career, the dean of CNU coaches ranks 16th among
active Division III coaches in winning percentage, running his
overall mark to 269-94-28 for a 72.4% winning mark. Over the last
seven seasons, Shaw and the Captains are averaging an impressive 17
wins per season, going 119-22-18 in that stretch for a winning
percentage over 80%, with six NCAA Tournament appearances and three
Elite Eight finishes.
Shaw has been named the Region Coach of the Year in 2000,
2009, 2011 and, now, 2014.
