Christopher Newport Freshman Justin Cerny Honored as CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week

YORK, Pa. -- Christopher Newport freshman Justin Cerny was named the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for March 25, 2015.

Christopher Newport freshman Justin Cerny was named CAC Player of the Week after posting a 7-1 overall record last week, including a 4-0 mark at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Cerny dominated his four singles matches, blanking his opponents 6-0, 6-0 in three of them, and claiming the fourth 6-0, 6-1. He cruised to his first career win over a regionally-ranked opponent, winning 6-0, 6-1 over Connor Winkler of Sewanee. In four doubles matches at No. 1 with David Reed, Cerny was 3-1, with the only defeat coming to nationally-ranked Washington & Lee.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

In the most recent ITA National Rankings (March 12), Mary Washington is ranked No. 19 and Christopher Newport is No. 38 ... Mary Washington sits atop the conference standings at 4-0, while Christopher Newport is also unbeaten at 1-0. Salisbury is the only CAC squad to not have played a conference match ... Junior David Lunding-Johansson led No. 19 Mary Washington to a win over No. 16 Bates on Friday and Saturday CAC wins over York and Penn State Harrisburg, as the Eagles improved to 14-3 on the year. He won, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, at three singles against Bates, and then won in straight sets over Penn State Harrisburg. In doubles, he and Andrew Curtis won at three, 9-8, over Bates, and teamed with Evan Charles to win at three against Harrisburg ... Eric Spangler posted a 5-1 record during a tough stretch of matches for Salisbury, as the Sea Gulls went 1-2 last week. Spangler and doubles partner Daniel Albers remained perfect at No. 1 doubles with an 8-2 win at Occidental followed by a pair of 8-5 wins against the top doubles pair from regionally-ranked schools Sewanee (No. 7) and Denison (No. 9) ... Penn State Harrisburg earned its first-ever CAC win, defeating St. Mary's 6-3 on Sunday. Chris Magee (No. 1 singles/No. 1 doubles) and Tyler Cook (No. 4 singles/No. 2 doubles) each posted a pair of wins to lead the Lions.
