CNU’s Christiansen, Schaefer Named C2C Tennis Players of the Week

The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) has announced its weekly awards following the seventh week of the 2025 spring tennis season.  Christopher Newport's Rainer Christiansen was tabbed C2C Men's Tennis Player of the Week, while the Captains Kylie Schaefer collected C2C Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors.


MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Rainer Christiansen, Christopher Newport

Christopher Newport freshman Rainer Christiansen won both of his singles matches at No. 5 for the Captains this week and went 1-2 in doubles play. In matches against No. 28 Wesleyan and No. 16 Kenyon, Christiansen won at No. 5 by scores of 6-4, 6-3 and 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, respectively. In doubles, he lost at No. 3 doubles against Wesleyan, No. 1 doubles versus Kenyon, and then paired with Nesh Kumaresan for a 6-0 win at No. 2 against Hendrix.


WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kylie Schaefer, Christopher Newport

Christopher Newport sophomore Kylie Schaefer went 2-2 in singles play and 4-0 in doubles action as Christopher Newport hosted four nationally-ranked opponents this week. In doubles, Schaefer and partner Raine Weis were tested but won four hard-fought battles against #5 Wesleyan (7-5), #15 Case Western Reserve (7-6 (8-6)), #37 Hope (7-5), and #7 Washington and Lee (7-6 (7-4)). In singles, Schaefer made her first career appearance at No. 1 when she narrowly lost to No. 38 Lily McCloskey from CWRU (4-6, 6-7 (5-7)) and then secured her first ever No. 1 victory against Hadley Krygier from Hope (4-6, 6-4, 6-4).  Finally, her win at No. 2 over No. 30 Allie Murrell (W&L) was the first against a ranked opponent in her career and helped CNU secure a one-point victory, 4-3, against the top 10 foe. It was the first win over a team ranked in the top ten nationally in program history.

C2C HIGHLIGHTS

Asher Willenborg went 2-2 in Salisbury's two matches on their California trip. On Monday against nationally ranked Babson he pushed his first singles opponent to three sets. Willenborg won both tilts on Wednesday against nationally ranked Grinnell, teaming up with Jhayden Pappas to take first doubles 6-3 before securing first singles in three sets… Junior Ryan King finished the week undefeated in his three singles matches for #27 Mary Washington. On Friday, he topped Gianluca Bocanegra of Kenyon at five singles, 6-2, 6-3, as one of two points scored by the Eagles. Later on Friday, he downed Cason Cole of Hendrix at three, 6-2, 6-0. He wrapped up the weekend with a 6-4, 6-4 win at four singles over Tai MacDonald of Wesleyan… Sophomore Addison Felts led #30 Mary Washington past Washington College on Saturday in the Eagles' lone game of the week. At one doubles, Felts and Natalie Kim defeated Eva Kading and Soleil Namunyola by a 6-1 score, leading the way to a sweep and doubles point. In singles, the Eagles continued their successful ways, as Felts topped Namunyola, 6-1, 6-0, at one as UMW swept all six flights.
